Bernhard Mannel is the instructor for this video. Bernhard lives in West Germany. He has been training protection dogs for over 60 years. He is a Schutzhund judge, has trained police service dogs, military dogs all his life. He did a series of protection training seminars in this country in the 1980's. I went to my first Mannel seminar in 1978. It did not take me long to realize that I was not watching a normal dog trainer. Bernhard is a master at what he does. This video was filmed at several seminars and has been edited to give a logical step by step training program to Bernhard's methods of starting young dogs in bite work.
Bernhard explains prey drive and introduces his students to defense. He goes into detail in explaining the difference between the two drives. He explains how to stress a dog in his defensive drive and then relieve that stress in prey drive. Dogs deal with stress in different ways, depending on their genetics and temperament. Bernhard demonstrates dogs that he calls "Low Stress Dogs." These are dogs with weak nerves and dogs that are quick to bark because they are nervous in front of the helper. He demonstrates medium stress dogs which are dogs that we want for our protection work (because they have sound nerves but still maintain a suspicion level) and he discusses high stress dogs. These are dogs that have no suspicion level and are very difficult to protection train.
This is a collector's video. Almost every top trainer in this country has benefited from the past 20 years of Bernhard's training.
In August of 1996, I produced a video that updated the information on Protection Training the Beginning. This new video is titled The First Steps of Bite Training.
If you are new to protection training it would be in your best interest to buy The First Steps of Bite Training before you purchase Protection Training the Beginning. The new video goes into more detail and breaks the training steps down much further than the older video. Use the older tape as additional learning material, use the new tape as your primary source of information.
