Product Description

The 15" Yellow Firehose Tug is a very strong, durable, and stiff tug that's easy to slip into your pockets. This tug is ideal for any dog who has a tendency to want to chase the handles of a tug or are working on their targeting skills. You'll be able to grip this tug at both ends with enough room for your dog to grip.

This tug is 15" long with a 5.75" circumference and 2" in diameter. If you'd like a smaller version of this tug, we also have the 10" Yellow Firehose Tug.

Longer tugs with no handles are the perfect training tool for the OUT command.

Dogs derive pleasure from being able to jerk a toy around. When training the OUT command, it is crucial to minimize the dog's ability to engage with the toy until they have successfully released it. Tugs with handles can offer too much leeway. A dog can easily 'self-reward' when the tug is held by the handles. This results in a dog who starts thinking it's a good idea to ignore the OUT command.

With this tug it's easy to "lock" the toy in place when giving the OUT command. Your dog will quickly learn it's no fun to pull at the tug when it's locked in place and will release the tug. This takes some practice but combined with marker training, this tug can be a useful training tool! To use this tug at its full potential, we recommend enrolling in our self-study online course on The Power of Playing Tug with Your Dog.

Tugs Are Not Chew Toys

This is a photo of a tug that was left unattended with a young dog (6 to 8 months) for about 20 minutes. Tugs are not chew toys and should never be left with dogs alone. When tugs are used correctly, they last for a very long time. When they are left unattended with a dog they may only last minutes.

This makes a great transition from food rewards for a dog with an abundance of drive. It doesn't bounce away like a ball. (Read that last sentence three times). After introducing my pup to a tug with handles and engaging in relationship games, he wants to get a bite in and is familiar with the feel of this. I can slip it in my pocket and present it quickly.

As a former Police K9 Officer, I've always used the firehouse tug to play with and reward my dog. It's durable and easy to slip in a pant's pocket or to hold in my armpit to drop to my dog for correct heeling position. And, the length is perfect allowing me enough room on the sides of his mouth to grab ahold of and play a fun game of tug with him.
