99.9% of the people who buy our ball on a string buy it to do drive work with their dog. If you don't know what that is - refer to my training articles of my DVD titled Building Drive, Focus & Grip.
The reason I sell this specific ball on a string vs. others I have found is because it's one of the softest balls I can find that I think will hold up.
Most of the balls I have seen are very hard rubber balls. I don't like a hard ball and I recommend that people not buy them. It is too easy to hurt a dog by accidentally hitting it in the head with these hard balls during drive training. If you have a dog with a soft temperament it is only going to take so many painful hits to the head before it decides that drive work is not that fun and it quits working. If you think I am kidding - go to Petsmart and hit yourself in the head with one of theirs.
1. This is not a chew toy. It's not meant to be left with a dog. Don't do it unless you want problems. (i.e. your dog chewing it up and eating it.)
2. The place to store the ball is in your training bag and not in a box of toys that is left out for the dog. (I am not a fan of leaving toys out. The toys are MY TOYS not my dogs toys - this is an important issue in my training program.)
3. These balls were not specifically designed to be used for what we use them for. (i.e. drive work and swinging a dog around up off the ground as it holds the ball.)
Because our ball is softer it is also pretty easy for the rope that comes with the ball to come out of the hole in the ball. If the rope comes off (or if the little plastic/metal clip that makes the loop handle comes off) don't worry about it. Just tie several knots in the rope and FORCE IT BACK THROUGH THE SMALL HOLE in the ball.
Use a large flat-bladed screwdriver to force the knot through the hole. In my opinion I don't like the loop anyway. I like the rope a little longer - without the loop - It's easier to make drive with.
4. If the rope comes out of the ball I will often go get a different nylon rope that feels better on my hands and use that instead.
5. Please don't get mad and call us when the rope comes out. Just take a second and put a bigger knot in the rope and poke it back through the hole so it does not come out so easily. If you go on a quest to find a soft ball like this you will appreciate what we have here. Accept it for what it is. (A great training aid - that may need some modification from the handler.)
