Samson, my Rottweiler, passed in April2006 he was by my side for 11 years. I was truly blessed by such a wonderful friend that I will never forget him. Age and some aches and pains are what took him from me. Given the choice I was lucky that he died in his sleep and I did not have to make the decision of putting him down. I will never forget our 11 years together. I will miss you "Samson, the handsomest man in the World"

He sounds wonderful. If you would ever care to post a photo, I know that I would like to see him.
I think almost everyone here knows that pain and grief. It will get better, I believe, as your brain learns to "click" over to the wonderful memories rather than the fact of death, even as you respect your grief. There is no such thing as "only a dog" with regard to such a beloved companion.
