I'm having an issue with my dog biting my hand while I am building drive.

I know he's not trying to bite my hand, or hurt me in anyway. He's really going for the ball, maybe the string, but he misses from time to time and grabs my hand.
ouch.

I have the building drive and focus dvd, but there doesn't seem to have a part on hand biting. All it says is to use a longer string.

Even when we build focus with a tug, or stick, he will grab the stick firm and them he mouth it and gets closer to my hand (he likes to bite the end of sticks I guess)

Any ideas?
Thanks

I am not sure if this is right, but it is what I do that works...I use tugs with my mal and I keep pressure on the tug once she has a good grip and I also keep my hands close to the sides of her mouth. We taught her to "target" the toy and not hands.
I also keep her low and move side to side and not up and down.
If I loosen on pressure she will try to regrip....ending in a "*!$&#^" on my end because I was not focused on what I was doing.

Ball on a string is used for fetch at my house, I do not let them target on that as my dogs jump pretty high and if they miss they are more than likely going to tag me by accident. Which results in ANOTHER "#(%&%$#)" on my end.....hee hee \:D

The only other thing I can say is, I would recommend NOT allowing sticks to be played with. Tugs, gum bars, lenghts of garden hose ect... but sticks can be really dangerous. IMHO anyway. \:\)

With a long tug, hold it by the handles or ends and hold it out away from your body - teaching your dog to target the middle of the tug.

Teeth touch hand = game over.

If you get a dog into a high enough drive state, you're going to take an occasional hand bite. It becomes as much about your speed and ability to dodge as it does about the dog.

Honestly, it goes with the territory. That's not to belittle what's happening, but it some ways it shows just how high you're able to push your dog into drive ( and that's a *good* thing )

If this was happening to you in our club, we'd be yelling encouragement at ya!

Good luck!

Beleive me, it's harder for older handlers to do the drive building and not get a chunk removed from their hands.

We had a new handler join our club several years ago ( Betty Waldron, a forum member ) who came with a great attitude for a novice. As she became more involved she eventually made the jump to a *high* drive puppy which has been removing tissue from her for the last two years.
She's trained it to almost a SchH I level but the beast will always be too fast for her....heck, the dog is too fast to all but maybe a trained martial artist, lol. But ol' Betty just smiles and slaps on another bandaid and goes back to training.
You gotta love an attitude like that!

Awww, shucks.

It's easy to have a good attitude when you have club members that show up only to help you with your own special Princess Weasel. Not to mention any names but they own a dog named Fetz...... \:\)

Lordy be, could you imagine the Weas withougt training?

Might I ask what you are building the drive for? Are you working in SAR, some other dog sport?

How I would deal with this issue (or if I would consider it an issue) would depend on my goals for my dog and myself.

Cheers,

Jennifer C
