If I marker train my dog for 2 minutes, how long should I wait before I work on drive building?

Hi Rick, I think the lack of response may be due to your questions. could you give more detail? I'm not sure what you mean.
Thanks
Lynn

I am sorry for the lack of clarity! I really do want an answer to this question, I was surprised no one had an opinion on this!

I am alluding to the advice Ed gives on the Basic Obedience DVD, when he says the dog is best trained in short, two minute segments rather than 15 minute segments. Then break for a few hours. This advice is in regards to marker training, and my question is can I go straight from marker training to drive building, or should I wait for a few hours in between these two different types of training?

I'll answer with my experience (if you are still in lil marker sessions)that is, HECK YES! Ending a marker session (ob as they age) on a positive note is, for me "YES" and then ball or play, essentially play/prey drive. If you are training commands with your drives, when the dog is older, it will make sense to spread the sessions out...just my 2cents.

Thank you for your input!

I can definately see ending the training sessions with the game. That sounds like fun to me, and I am sure Bella would agree!

If it were me, I'd wait a few hours before I worked on building drive, or do the drive building work first then the ob marker training. Reason being because I want to get the drive up as high as possible and if the dog has a belly full of treats, or expended some energy thinking hard about the exercises you have just worked on the drive level may suffer a bit.

If the dog is already doing focus work in your drive sessions you can incorporate known OB exercises into these sessions. If the dog is confused you can mark the correct behavior before giving drive satisfaction but as soon as the dog is showing that he is beginning to understand what is required of him I would drop the markers from the OB drive work.
