Hello,

I was wondering if anybody knows about labrador retriever. As I have heard, this dog is for hunting. But, is it possible to train it to be protection dog? Is it more difficult than training a german sheperd for protection?

Yes. Way more difficult. Physically, they can look imposing, but they just weren't bred for protection.

I am not an expert and I don't train dogs for protection, but I can't imagine a Lab as a PPD. I suppose it's possible, anything is possible, but it doesn't seem likely to me.
I'll let the real experts give you the final lowdown.

Labs can sure be trained to do some sleevework as any dog that likes to play tug. But most labradors donīt have a agressive bone in their body (or at least shouldnīt) and even if some whould defend their master in case of an attack, picking a dog that is expected to defend ones master, lab should probably be pretty down on the list. GSDs, mals, rotties, dobes are naturally protective but labs have it in their nature to offer tea to the person breaking in the house.

I own a Lab and yes, I think it would be VERY difficult to train one in protection and to do the work you'd expect of a protection dog.

My Lab is territorial and puts on a really good *show* if anyone strange shows up at my house. He sounds convincing but if the poop hit the fan I doubt if he'd defend me.

But I do have to add...I had the shock of my life this morning when he positioned himself in front of my chair and seriously growled at the new male vet we were seeing. \:o That was a first.

IMO it would be the exception not the rule for the breed. If I remember correctly when I was young a lab attacked a kid that beat up his owner.

Labs can be territorial and some are aggressive (depends on the bloodlines and how they are raised) but to actually title one.....that would be really tough IMHO.

If you are going to get into the sport or PPD world it would be best to get a breed that is known for it's ability and from great breeders.

No sense trying to turn a dog into something that they are just not meant to be normally when bred correctly.

Stick with a GSD or a Mal. Labs were not meant for protection work. Even within the working line GSD's it's hard to find a dog that will actually protect for real. Easier to find for sport, but for real protection... that's tough.

IMO you would have the same chance of finding a working Lab that wants to do protection work, as you would finding a working line GSD retrieving a duck to hand with a soft mouth. Good luck (G).
