Without being too specific, I'm being forced out of my house and back into an apartment due to an ongoing and seemingly never ending legal battle with my vindictive and deceitful ex-wife.

None of the apartments in my kids' school district will allow GSDs and so, in addition to half the time with my kids that I fought for 6 years ago, it looks like I will now lose my best 4-legged friend, Brenna.

I've asked Ed's permission to post about our situation and he said it was ok...fyi

Here are her lines for those who might be interested:

Sorry, I posted my response in the other thread.

I'm very sorry to hear that you will lose Brenna. Any chance of renting a house or townhouse? Working out a deal/security deposit with a apartment landlord? It would be terrible to have to give her up. You have probably thought of these things already.

Where do you live? Maybe a local GSD rescue has someone who could foster her for you until you can get back on your feet?????

I'm in a rent house now, Angela, but the recent changes made in a protracted custody battle that's now over is forcing me into a smaller, less expensive place. All of the apartments around the kids' schools have breed ban laws. I'm mad and sad all at the same time. If I didn't have the kids on school days I could live anywhere I wanted, but she wouldn't let that happen so as a result, I have to live in district so they get bus service to each of their schools. It's messy and I didn't want any of it.

She's been such a comfort and joy to me...to lose her like this is just awful.

I'm SO sorry, Mike. \:\(

I've been in your situation for a long time now and I truly know how terrible it is. My heart goes out to you and Brenna both.

What a crappy situation!

Angela already suggested this, but have you looked at apartments in houses? It can be easier to persuade a single private landlord rather than property management companies. Also, when applying, make up a dog portfolio outlining all of the training you've done to demonstrate that your dog is well-behaved and have some references from trainers, vets, and your current landlord. You could also mention all of the perks of having a dog living on the property, such as lower chances of break-ins, etc.

Good luck with your search.

I am sorry about what happened to Brenna and you. Do you have any close friends or family that are willing to foster or take her in? This is so awful!

I'm basically on my own on this one...my family lives hours away from me.

I'm still trying to figure it out and maybe find a way to keep her, but I have very limited time and need to prepare for the worst.

thank you for your concern...it means alot.

Mike,

I am so sorry for your situation, it strikes me as very odd that your x can control where you can and cannot live. It seems to me that if your x lives within the school district then the kids are entitled to attend that school and ride the bus from their scheduled place. When you have the kids I don’t see how it would be anyone’s business if you live in that district or not as long as you drive your kids to and from either the school or the bus stop.

My grandkids attend the San Juan School District where my daughter lives; however her x lives about 50 miles away and has the kids in the middle of the week each week. It doesn’t matter to the school how far away the x lives as long as he gets the kids to school on time for class.

JMO, but I think you may have a bit more options then what your x would like to dictate to you. You could check with the school to see if it requires both parents to live within the district for the kids to attend or if one parent living within the district meets with it requirement.

Good Luck

Mike, sorry to hear of your situation.
You don't have it listed in your profile; where do you live?

I second what Peggy said. I understand you have to move down in cost but I truly don't think you have to live in district. Also where do you live you never know who might know someone in your area or might live in your area and be willing to help.
