I have been asked to cross post and forward this to anyone who is interested in seeing the rabies laws changed:

This is a news story about a woman who claims her dog was killed by the rabies vaccine. She is calling for a change in the laws to get governments to accept titers. It's a start.

http://www.thebostonchannel.com:80/news/16410586/detail.html?rss=bos&taf=bos

Please call or e-mail the station, WCVB-TV, 781-449-0260 and ask them to do a follow-up story. E-mail Susan Griffin at sgriffin@hearst.com. Also, it would be helpful if you could forward this to your networks/lists and ask them to do the same! Any media coverage in the states bodes well for all states, so please send an e-mail or make a quick call.

Thanks.

Shody,

Do we have permission to cross post this as well? I would love to put it on my other boards as well as my website and our team website.

Yes, put it any and every where. I get all these things from Kris L. Christine the Founder, Co-Trustee of THE RABIES CHALLENGE FUND. So please post away, and forward to every one. She is very passionate about getting the laws changed and appreciates the help spreading the word.

Oh my gosh, this is horrible. I am posting it somewhere else too. My cat died from a 3 years rabies shot. She got an injection site tumor and it grew so rapidly that I had no alternative but to put her down. I was never told that a three year rabies (in cats) increased the chances for this cancer, had I done the one year vaccine she would still be here. I know this is a dog board but just wanted you to know that I too have been affected by rabies vaccines. I need to research that titer test. Thanks!

I'm "cat ignorant", but I was under the impression that the 1 and 3 year rabies vax were the exact same thing. Only the schedule was different.

The feline 1 & 3 year rabies vaccine are 2 different vaccines. The canine rabies vaccine is the same thing, different schedule.

Katie, I wish I could remember exactly. It's something to do with the duration of protection.

I got the whole explanation about 2 years ago and what I do remember is being REALLY surprised that no one at my hospital had bothered to educate me that there even was a difference.

Basically, the 1 year shot is supposedly really only good for 1 year. So, if a vet only carries the 1 year vaccine and is using that vaccine on a 3 year schedule, the cat isn't "technically" protected.

Hey guys,

Sorry, didn't really get an explanation either, finding out my cat had a mailicious cancer had my mind elsewhere and I didn't ask as many questions as I should have. They wanted to remove her leg and shoulder but said the cancer would probably come back before the stitches even healed. I had to make the tough decision to put her down...making her a "tripod" ($3000) with no guarantees for her to even survive a short while was too much. Plus she would have had to endure chemo (she was 13) so we opted to not put her through it. I have a new vet that absolutely refuses to give the 3 year, even if it is requested. I wish I was going there when my poor Rusty cat got hers. I did however know that 3 years for dogs is different and should have said that. Of course, I freaked out because my beagle had the 3 year, my vet reassured me. Reading all of this info on not vaccinating is very interesting. I just don't know what to do or how to protect my new dog without vaccines. I will read more here and do outside research. I know someone who just had to put a puppy down due to parvo.
