JUST STARTED THE SEARCH FOR A NEW GSD FOR OUR FAMILY. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON A YOUNG DOG OR PUP WITH GOOD NERVES AND TEMPERMENT. THIS WAS THE FIRST PLACE I WOULD START.

Mr. Thiele,

This is not in the general arena of your question but it is just outside the area... I think.

I have [now] four GSDs. One I bought from a reputable breeder [Max], one I bought from a hmmmm 'breeder' [Freya], and two I adopted from the GSD rescue. The two obtained from the breeders came with the AKC stuff.

My highest drive dog is a german [I got the 'pinks' when I adopted her] originally named Kleo von der Konigsgarde, but re-named by me 'Brio' - and a rescue.

My latest [this past week] started out as a foster and almost instantly blended with the pack to the point where I adopted her after three days. She is about 10 months of age, no papers, perfect, huge enthusiasm, an immediate family member. I named her Kai, after Natasha Kai of the US Women's Soccer Team, for her drive.

My point... You can buy dogs from a breeder and most probably get a great dog, or at least one you can return [read reputable breeder] - I have two who I wouldn't give up for anything. Or you could go to a rescue and look around and see if there was one who might be the young dog or pup who seems to have good nerves and temperment - I have two of them too I wouldn't give up for anything.

The dogs are balanced - or seem to be - enthusiastic, no wimps, and wonderful additions to the family. In truth you can't tell what dog came from where [except maybe for Brio].

Lots of resources, lots of places to get a dog, and the objective is to find the right dog - I think.

Two cents.

Don't overlook a rescue as a valuable resource for a good dog.

I bought my first GSD from a breeder who took him back from his original owners at 18 months. He was gorgeous and a WONDERFUL pet. HE really had no issues (not super friendly with other dogs but learned). He was already housetrained and knew some obedience commands. At the time my girls were young and it was great for him to just fit right in.

I adopted a female a year later from GSD rescue. She was a stray, had issues and probably was from working lines (because of her energy). It wasn't as easy to live with her, but many of her issues got better with training and time.

Since then I've had a puppy and that was a lot more work, but I knew what I was getting into and it's worked out fine. Do a lot of research if you want a puppy, otherwise there might be an older dog out there that would fit right in!

Good luck,
Lisa
