Attack CATS!

OK, So we where doing introduction with new dog and the cats. Two of my four cats are inside/outside. They where outside, had new dog on leash, he was interested, but not "Im-gonna-get-me-a-cat" or anything, he would change direction and not be fixated on them at all.
So hes about 2ft away from one, being nice but interested, they're ok for 10 seconds, then she starts to hiss, I'm backing off with him, when the other one comes racing from across the yard charging and attacking him, then the one closest starts attacking, the other two dogs come over (yes I now realize they shouldn't have been in the yard with us at all) but the cats just attacked any piece of dog they could get a claw into. The cats have lived with my two dogs for years, and other dogs their whole lives.
So my main question is, What now??? I thought they where supposed to run away if they felt threatened, but I have these two ninja cats???
One of the inside cats didn't bugger out at all and the new dog was great.
Anyone have any ideas about what I should do next?
BTW he's a 10 month old (approx),nuetered, APBT who tested fine with cats.

If the dog or the cats had been in crates, this situation can be avoided.
