Hi All,

I was wondering if the Dominant Dog Collar can be used to correct a dog that pulls.

Thank you,

Leslie

The DD collar is meant for serious dominant-aggressive problems. It is not intended to give a painful correction; it takes the air away from the dog.

So no, it is not meant as a pulling correction at all.

Tell us what is happening. You just mean pulling on the walk? How old is the dog?

Hi Connie,

Thanks for replying.

Kobe is a 2 year old neutered male Doberman.

Yes he pulls on the leash walking when he is over stimulated.... something in the environment has caught his attention and he is worried about it. He is also reactive when he see other dogs and we are out walking. Funny thing is he plays great with all the other dogs at the place I leave him for day care. He is also fine with other dogs when he is with a friend of mine who is a behaviorist/trainer. His reactivity to other dogs seems to be related to me and/or my other dog. The reason I say this is because he is fine with the dog trainer and fine at Doggie Day Care but reactive when I am around and worse when the other dog is with us.

He has also jumped up and nipped 3 people recently. Once just after a gentleman stopped petting him and moved his hand away, once a teenage girl standing within leash distance admiring him and once a woman walking past us on the beach within leash distance. All 3 had a bruise as well as a very minor scratch.

I read the following in Groundwork to Establish Pack Structure with Adult Dogs by Ed....
"When I walk a new dog it is usually on a prong collar, a dominant dog collar or both. These collars will self correct when the dog pulls into the lead."

I also watched several of Ed’s video clips on the web site and listened to several pod casts and remember him saying in one of them that some dogs get more aggravated/agitated with prong collars which was my experience with Kobe. I tried on for about a week and he got much worse. I went back to his Gentle Leader which I know Ed does not recommend and the dog became calmer and much more manageable.

I can get him to down and stay as the other dogs walk past as long as the other dog does not get to close. If I have him out with my other dog he is a little worse.... as another dog approaches if it gets to close he will lunge at my other dog sort of screaming and snapping pushing her away from the other dog and then lunge toward the other dog hackles up barking this high pitched very annoying screechy sound..... which is a sound he frequently makes when he is very excited.

That's most of it.

Thanks so much,

Leslie

I'm sorry I missed the reply, Leslie.

Do you know anything about desensitizing the dog to other dogs?

This thread might help:

Please post back with your level of basic ob work, whether you are marker-training, etc.
