Some of you may remember that in April of this year my 6.5y GSD male suddenly became very ill and later died in May.

I recently decided that I was ready for another dog and have been considering either a rescue or another a new puppy.

My last dog was a large GSD. Previously, I have owned Chow Chows. My family has owned and bred Dobermans, GSDs and other breeds. No experience with Malinois.

I am considering adopting this dog http://www.malinoisrescue.org/nerescue.shtml#Oso and looking for advice. We are still in the early stages; I've completed the application but have not met the dog and the rescue organization has not 'checked' me out yet (as far as I know). However, they have not left a message to call them.

Do any forum members have experience with this particular rescue group? If so, how truthful are their descriptions?

Are there any red-flags in the write-up for this particular dog? I did not see any but maybe someone else can read between the lines.

Background:

My house mate has a senior Boxer (rescue) neutered male. His dog seems to get along with or tolerate everything but non-neutered males. However, for what ever reason he liked being around Argos (my non-altered male). The Boxer has always has the run of the house and whatever dog I bring into the home cannot negatively impact the existing dog.

My immediate family has a mix of mixed breed and purebred dogs but none that are working breeds. I also have a 3 year nephew who at some time may interact with my next dog.

I have access to good training help if needed and will make use of that resource (local club).

When I lost Argos he had gotten to that good stage of GSD. Knew what was expected of him, ready to go but also content with 'chilling' out. He loved to travel and I took him anywhere I could. I spend alot of time in the mtns of WestVa when I am not trapped in Baltimore City.

I live within 2 blocks of a 100 acre city park, in a dog friendly neighborhood but in a typical Baltimore rowhouse; multiple levels and no back yard (just a small courtyard with a 6 foot fence.

I do not let my dogs or anyone's dogs that I am watching off leash except in well-controlled fenced in areas.

Thoughts?

It sounds good to me. It sounds as though the rescue will screen you first and decide if you are a potential match, then call you. I would try and speak to the actual foster home if I could, as they will have the best handle on the dog's temperament. Be honest about your situation. Be prepared to address what the rescue might think is a weakness (some like to see fenced yards) so explain your exercise and training plan for the dog. Play up your strengths as they relate to this particular dog (you're active, you take your dog everywhere you can, you have no cats or kids and know how to supervise a dog when your nephew visits, etc).

I think that on the surface, it sounds like a good match. \:\) He's a beautiful dog. Good luck!

Thank you. Those are great points. I expect to speak with the organization today and I believe I will be talking directly with the current foster.

Not having a fenced yard was not an issue with my GSD as he loved his walks in the city and the nearby parks. Baltimore does not have many dog parks (doesn't matter to me as I would not use them) but it is a great walking city with easy access to trails just outside the city.

My biggest concern is integrating the new dog into a home with the elderly Boxer. The Boxer is very well-mannered but his owner has always treated him more a person than a dog. I tend to be more of a dog stays off furniture guy so I do not want the new dog to learn 'bad' habits.

Coming from someone with multiple dogs. Having one set of rules for one dog and another set for the other dog will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to enforce if the dogs are not kept separately.

This means if one dog is allowed onto the couch, the other dog will go on too. If one dog is fed from the table, the other dog will learn to beg. etc. (plus you cannot control what your roommate allows when you are not there, if your dog is out).

Something to be aware of, so you don't set yourselves up for failure.

The dogs may very well get along, but I would crate the new dog separately at first to allow him to acclimate. Ed has an excellent article on introducing dogs that works very well.

Angela,

You and I are on the same page.

My largest issue will be with ensuring compatibility.

Crate use is a definite. We kept the dogs separated before with barriers even though we did not have any 'getting along' issues.

I am resigned to the fact that my 'rules' may not always be enforced in the manner I would do so when I am not present.

I tend to be risk adverse.

In that case, may I ask why you aren't considering a female? Male-female pairs tend to be the most succesful (although I have 3 boys that all get along).
