has anyone tried the weighted dog vests for a reactive dog? it was briefly mentioned in the dog reactive dog thread, and have been thinking more about trying it.
my dog is pretty small though. it seems the smallest one they make would still be too big. anyone know of a smaller one? or do they not make smaller ones, because they don't think small dogs should be using them?

The problem with weighted vests is balance and the smaller it is, the harder it would be to add or remove weight to it. I think your best bet would be either to use a backpack and try to add or remove weight that way or just take your dog swimming if possible. Also, I wanted to say whether your dog was reactive or not, the vest is for the same purpose. You are trying to reduce their energy and in some cases help build muscle. But everything is gradual so you never start with a lot of weight on them. It is the same for the weighted vests for people as well. Most people can't start with 20lbs on, but the build up from 2lbs or 4lbs or whatever they can and build up from their. Usually when I walk my dogs with their vests, I wear mine as well. It is a funny sight, but it is only fair and is a great workout.
If you do find a small weighted vest, please share as I would love to stick one on my little dog as well. I can only take her swimming for now, but with her undercoat, it actually works like a weighted vest anyways if she gets wet enough.
On a side note, it is well worth mentioning as it is about weighted vests, muscle is built. You need to keep in mind your dog will become stronger and faster the more you use the vest and so you will need to up your reaction time if you aren't able to see what your dog reacts to before they do and redirect it. This also goes for a dog who pulls and/or chases. This by no means was directed at you Jenn but is just a heads up for everyone else who may see this thread.

Good points. Last thing I need too is a dog with more muscle and power to be pulling and lunging on the leash! I did think about that a little.
I do have a small backpack (although she doesn't care for it much) that I could try to fill up and see how that goes.
I'll post if I find anything like the weighted vest for small pooches.
