Ahem, okay got it.
Do I need to take a test now? Is my wall decoration/dust collector written in some Latin I can't read?
And I want it colorful, ya know so people notice it.

Let me know where to send my course fee.

I will drive it up there. Just send it to me, Randy.

Kevin, I'm glad you got the help you needed: basic door behavior (for all dogs, pretty much), basic furniture behavior, and maybe a bit of unnecessary and potentially counterproductive alpha-rolling ;\) ---- but all in all, you jumped right on the problem, you got help right away, and it can be very useful to have the trainer there one-on-one to explain with your dog right there. And that's not a huge fee, either. \:\)

Good for you, and good for your dog. Let him know always that you are the leader and protector between him and the world, as mentioned earlier in the thread, and he will not perceive that he must try to fill the role. Not just at the door, but in other things too: If the dog is anxious when strangers loom over, approach, or touch him, then you will be between them and the dog (for example).

If you are a calm, in-charge, assertive leader, then the dog will not perceive that he has to try to make the rules and lead the pack.

I have to say that I agree with Will on this. JMO, of course.

You might also find that lots and lots of training experience is going to naturally do this ... work with lots of different dogs and keep learning; it's hard not to learn dog psychology if your experience with different dogs is both deep and wide. \:\)

And while you do this, you can't go wrong (IMO) with these:

http://leerburg.com/952a.htm

The third one is/was the best (for me), but even though they took some saving up and some begging (family, for LB gift certificates), the set was worth every penny.

I am definitly open to learning all methods of training to create my own. Im not for the alpha roll but at least I know about it and now I can have an opinion on it based on what I think of it and not what I hear about it. I'm glad I have a solution to my problem tho. Hopefully this will work, I will let you guys hear about my progress. Thanks for the good comments and tips people.

thx connie, that is really nice of you. When I say find a school to learn dog behavior, I meant hands on training. But I will definitly get those books to learn about that.

Thanx again Connie!

I don't know where you're located Kevin, but I'll let you in on a secret.

Just out of curiousity (I have never done this or recommended it), but why would you not correct for growling? Will the correction escalate into aggressive behavior?

Kristen, the problem with correcting for growling is that you may eliminate the growling, but end up with a dog that bites without any warning.

I would think that especially in a fearful dog this might be the end result...

Thanks for the response. I always like explanations for things I don't understand 100%.
