That was my thought too, Dennis.

I would hate to have anyone read something like that headline and conclude that rescue dogs were time bombs.

I am sure most rescues try the best they can to screen as best they can, when I tried to re home Roxie most of them didn't want anything to do with her...

"Mr Jones, has Roxie ever bit anyone?"

"Only when I told her to"

"Thank you Mr Jones.... oh my look at the time I'm late, we'll get back to you soon........"

Seriously, I think it would be very rare for a dog to bite out of the blue without any sort of warning. Just a guess on my part seeing this poor guy was a dog owner before, he may of initiated some rough housing that his previous dog understood as play and his new dog didn't. hopefully there will be a follow up and an honest statement from the victim

How sad and I'm not sure there is a reason that will ever come out but can anyone explain to me.....why you would quarantine the dog if the decision has been made to euthanize. Wouldn't you euthanize and then test for rabies? I'm assuming(which might be the problem) the poor victim would have been treated for rabies as a precaution either way.....

You are right. It would make more sense if the dog were being kiled anyway, to test the brain. It is much more certain than observing behavior. And sometimes rabies can have a longer than usual incubation period and not manifest during the time frame expected.

The article also says the AB isn't considered a Bully Breed. I thought it was. They're listed in the BSL for Lake County Indiana. Who knows you think they would autopsy him after the euthanasia, maybe he had a brain tumor? Maybe the guy passed out and fell on the dog freaking it out? Either way very sad story.

I doubt it's a brain thing. I think it's a dog thing.

The most common occurrences for these kinds of owner maulings is the owner falling due to either seizure, heart attack, or stroke. *sorry not a scientific study* On the rarest of rare occasions you'll see this behavior in a pack of dogs after one of them has a seizure, is recovering from surgery or a injury, or a simple possession moment that gets out of hand.

These things are rare... rarer than rare. I've only heard of maybe one every other year. Usually a grisly scene either involving the very old, or the very young.

So the dog attacks because of the seizure or the seizing person falls on the dog and it attacks thinking it's protecting itself? I know there are some dogs who predict seizures.

Seizure alert dogs (the ones that do the job with any kind of accuracy) usually sit or down on the onset of pre seizure symptoms.

This is a different ball of wax. Just as random movements in kids can trigger some bad behaviors in dogs the random movements, thrashing, and disorientation combined with the people being helpless can create a very horrible situation with a dog that triggers to it.

The worst one that haunts me was an attack on an elderly man in Canada where he was mauled by his dog after suffering a stroke which turned into a predatory moment while the man was aware but unable to get away. The RCMP had to shoot the dog upon entry to the property. This elderly fellow lost an arm and pieces of his face but survived. I cannot imagine the horror of being in such a situation which is part of the reason the rarity of these events is such a blessing.
