Thanks everybody! All good tips. I think exercising him will help tremendously, however, it does not help for the unexpected guests. \:\) For those, I'm just going to have to stick to the no touch, no talk, no eye contact that we've been doing.

And Connie, I agree, males always have a reserve tank no matter how "empty" their bladder is! \:\)

And I must admit, we are not good about the "place" command. We usually just crate him when he is too excited or when people come over. We say, "kennel up" and he does, but we have to lock him in there to make him stay.

If we are training the "place" command, do you all suggest a new place on a blanket somewhere? Or should we use his kennel (crate) for that and just teach him to stay w/o us locking it? I think this may help our problem b/c it would bend his brain a little bit and force him to control himself, whereas before, the gate forced him...kwim? Any tips much appreciated!

Self/impulse control is a good thing.

If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.

At our house, we have the 'place' command different from the kennel. That way we can have a 'place' in any room we want and don't have to worry about moving the kennel. So he's learned that when we say 'place' it's one spot in the kitchen, another in the living room, etc. It comes in very handy - it's like having a kennel in every room!
