Hey All!
I asked Ed to start this area as the place to discuss BSL and politics that are directly related to *dog* issues.

So........if it's a political subject that will affect dog ownership in some way, this is the place!

I recently found out that all of the apartments in my area (Houston and West Houston, Tx) have BSLs and will not allow a GSD unless it's a working dog with credentials and even then, it's a case by case basis.

This may cause a permanent change in my life with my dog.

To me, this is nothing but a death sentence for thousands of dogs within the next couple of years simply because there's no place for owners to live with their dogs if they can't afford to buy or lease a home. Singles or single parents will and are being affected by these prejudicial laws.

Hi Mike,

I actually live in NW Houston right now(originally from Minnesota)in an apartment but we are moving at the end of August to Dallas.
I have a 7 month old GSD so my eyes popped out my head when I read your post! I am sorry but I don't know what BSLs is? Could you tell me?
We will be buying a house, but for now it sounds like I am going to have to live in hiding until then. Since I am not from Texas, I don't even know the rules for dog owners.

I agree with you that it does seem like a death sentence. Have you looked into it further to know what your rights are?
If you don't mind letting me know the details of what happened that you found out such unfortunate news.

I have a GSD mix (with a "Canine Good Citizen" certificate) and I basically don't have anywhere to go. I've spent hours on the phone and internet but no one will allow GSDs (among other breeds including mixes) in apartments, especially. It sucks. So, yea, I'm 27 and stuck living at home with my mom until my boyfriend and I buy a house. I want another dog so bad, but unless I live out of a cardboard box, that's not going to happen.

Do you start with the CGC info?

And do you say "mix" (I mean, he is a mix, right?) rather than "GSD"?

It makes me sick to have to suggest that GSD is a bad name to say, but I would start with the parts that the property owner want to hear: What a CGC is, that your dog has earned it, and that your dog is a mix.

Unfortunately, most places, if you tell them it's a "mix" - they want to know what exactly it is. I could always lie and say that he is a Leonberger/Collie mix, but he definitely looks more Shepherd than anything else, which means people would complain and I don't want to take that risk. When I try to explain that my boy has a CGC and what it is, it doesn't usually matter.

Kristen, they have no way of proving your dog is such and such. I have seen Heinz 57s that look like purebred whatsits. You can say your dog is whatever you want to. I had a Rottie that I told people was a black and tan coonhound mix and that ended that.

As far as rental companies and landlords are concerned I have a greyhound mix(dog in my sigpic) You can always say he is some rare breed that most people have never heard of. I know people with pitbulls that are listed as Pointers/mixes or Plott hounds or beagle mix etc.

I have a large Lab mix and the other two in the pic for my signature are rescues. Obviously the one on the left is being labled a pitbull and, you guessed it, here in lake County Indiana we have breed restrictions. I am supposed to have her in a harness(dog trainers know this makes a dog pull more)and have a sixfoot fence. Also I may not have my windows open (I kid you not) as "Pitbull" looking dogs may bust through the screen, escape and kill someone. She is taking her CGC test on August 1st. I think my other one in the pic is a bulldog or boxer mix of some sort. Howhever I'm sure he would be misidentified by this cloudy law. Rottweilers have been lumped into the mix of breed restrictions here as well any dog that resembles any of the Bully breeds.

Where I live they can decide not to rent a place to you based on your pets. However once you are living there they can not evict you if you get a pet.

After you move your dog in you could say that it used to be a helper dog for your handicapped brother who has now had to move to a hospital temporarily due to complications, then grab your nose between your eyes and take a deep breath.

As long as you pick up after your dog and don't let it run at large your neighbours should be ok with you. The building we lived in; we met everyone because I was always in the elevator "going for a walk".

Say "hi", smile, it will work in your favour. The building will soon love your dogs.

Some dogs laws are ridiculous, but it is the few that ruin it for the many.
