I have what I think is a unique problem. I own a 7 year old dog that is, of course, house trained. Three years ago I bought a boat that allows us to anchor out if we want and dinghy ashore.

Most of the time there is no problem. He can "hold it" over night. Twice, though, he has had loose stools that has caused him distress. One time we were in a location that meant a dinghy ride at night, in windy conditions that was not safe.

Can anyone suggest how I can train my dog to relieve himself on the boat (maybe on a piece of carpet) if he needs to?

How big is the dog?

Try a litter box; I think they have them for big dogs, too. Also, they have patches of fake grass with plastic hydrants for city dogs, too. Of course, you will have to get him in the mindset that it's ok to use this contraption before he actually needs to...

Then you could try the large litter box, or maybe even the big puppy pad thingies. Is he a marker or a squatter? If he's a marker, try the hydrant thing. People who live in highrise buildings put them on their patios sometimes and I've heard most dogs are ok w/them.

Many people who locally do ship to shore stuff with their dogs do a papertrain or litterbox thing. For boys they usually get a pee post that you can get at a petstore.

Just like potty training in the beginning it's just a matter of environmental control and a correct marker at the right time.
