My dog Cody is recovering nicely, but at this time is unable to continue his raw diet due to the effects of his illness and the stripping of the lining in his colon when he hemmoraged for about 3 days. Soon he will be off his meds and I would like to supplement his cooked chicken breast with a good, natural, supplement until he can get back to eating his regulary diet. I think he is depleated in the mineral department because when I take him outside he tries to lick and eat dirt. This little guy is going to kill me. They believe whatever he ate before is what nearly killed him! Does anyone know of a good overall supplement I could give him? He now weighs about 17 lbs, was about 20, and is allergic to wheat.
ALso, has anyone used Show Coat? and what do you think of it? Thanks sharon
He has to have calcium.
There are "overall" supplements (like Balance IT) to balance a very limited diet. I would prefer (by a lot) to make a home-cooked diet that is varied and balanced (which would of course have calcium supplemented).
Did you look at Lew Olson's liver-support diet?
Fish oil and E are part of the diet. Can you link us to Show Coat?
http://www.b-naturals.com/newsletter/liver/ QUOTE: Good foods to use for a dog with liver disease include: Protein sources: Eggs, low fat cottage cheese, yogurt, chicken (with skin and visible fat removed), and fish. Carbohydrate sources: Oatmeal, barley, whole wheat bread, pulped vegetable skins and canned pumpkin.* Fat sources: Meat fat, Omega 3 fatty acids such as fish body oil or salmon oil (NOT cod liver oil). Omega 3 fatty acids help with organ function. ..... Since this diet is devoid in calcium, save the eggshells and dry them overnight. Grind them in a coffee bean grinder and add them back at 1/2 teaspoon per pound of food served. END
Immediately under this text is info on amounts (per dog size) and what proportion of the diet each component is.
I would start with the calcium (see immediately above), which is critical in any long-term diet.
Or you could use The Honest Kitchen (no bacteria load because of the dehydrating process) with the poached chicken added per the THK package and just add your fish oil and E. Complete diet.
*For this dog with a wheat allergy I would use the last two of the carb items.

"They believe whatever he ate before is what nearly killed him!"
"Believe" is a big problem for me. As the other thread points out, salmonella is readily testable. "He might have had salmonella" is not an appropriate vet comment.

But right now, yes, no pathogen load is a wise choice, regardless of what made him so sick.
Poor lil guy. I am SO glad that he is recovering.

Or you could start with the poached chicken, plain pumpkin, and the calcium from shells while you look for THK.
I would use fish oil and E with any of these choices. He needs the anti-inflammation benefits.

I suggested that to them and they said not to use them for awhile do to the fact his system is so unbalanced right now. The show coat name is wrong, it is called showstopper you can find in on this link under dogs http://www.an-nat.comThanks
I'd give fish oil before I'd give this: Beef fat, Stabilized rice bran, Chicken oil, Canola oil, Safflower oil, etc. That's Showstopper.
I disagree about the fish oil, but I'm not a health professional.* You need a health professional's advice.
I'd probably try hard to see if I could consult with his old vet just about the diet, even if just about that one item.
* Lew Olson is one, however. Maybe an email ..... I don't know how many she can respond to, but I would consider it worth a shot.
