How well will the foam work at the beach? The winds can be pretty strong at times 15 to 20 mph is not unusual . I do not want that stuff flying back at me as I am allergic to pain (it makes me break out in tears).

If you had to pick which defense you would use, would it be spray or a walking stick? All things being equal I would prefer to use the pepper as that will not cause permanant damage to the dog but that is secondary to what can best protect my pups.

Thanks

I've read that it's better (if you have the time!!) to try to spray a dog in front of the nose, as opposed to the eyes. Comments???

But, you should also save at least one good shot for the irresponsible owner!!

I'm a little late to this party, but I highly recommend that you take a look at www.canemasters.com if you are interested in a sturdy walking stick for possible use as a defensive weapon. I am very satisfied with my hickory cane (the standard model). Canemasters offers a fairly wide selection of models, and will even do custom work (but it costs).

If you're worried about the pepper spray blowing back onto you or your dogs...try DIRECT STOP from Premier.
It's a citronella spray that won't harm but will stop most dogs.
We have a young girl in our neighborhood who walks a large rottie with no leash who is very dog aggressive and chewed up an ACD(leashed) recently.
I was advised to get the Direct Stop so I did...sure hope it works and sure hope I don't need it!!!

Dang it Bryan I was figuring it would ba a walking stick with a cattle prod in the end or something. Thats what I want

I have used the citronella spray and it did stop a dog that was charging us but I don't know what it would do on a really BAAAAD dog. If I could get away with it, I would carry a 300fps BB pistol - I think that is enough to hurt but not penetrate the skin.

Nancy, if you shoot a tough dog with a 300fps BBgun, all your gonna do is p!$$ it off. We used to play cowboys and indians with the old Red Ryder BBguns. Leg and butt shots only . If 8-10yr old kids keep comming back for more, it ain't gonna do much to deter a big dog. Now a 9mm or a 40 cal will do lots better.
My personel walking stick is an old ax handle. Not to heavy, and made to swing.

I'll try intimidation tactics if they'll work and throw a handful of rocks to reinforce the issue, but if that won't work or if the dog is charging. . . my hand is on my pistol and I'm a fair shot.

I've lost a dog to an attack by a neighbor's dog, it sucks. It won't happen again. I'll cheerily face the legal battle after I shoot the dog. My lawyer is half Orc and a nasty SOB.

I agree with Old Earth Dog Bob Scott, the BB gun will not stop a dog that is coming after you or your dog. Aaahhh, I remember the days of the Red Ryder BB gun fights!!! Except I got shot in the top of the head! I also agree with VanCamp. Carry your pistol (I prefer a .45) and take the dog out. The cane allows the dog to get too close and he could still injure you or your dog.
