Hi friends. I realize I'm somewhat late to the dance on this one.

I'm not sure I really understand the concept of building drive. On the surface it would seem to me that a dog either has drive or he does not.

Apparently, a dog's drive can be built, right? Can anyone briefly expand on this so that I can better understand this concept? Thank you.

In a nutshell

Yes -- every dog has drive. Building drive is basically finding something that the dog likes or finds attractive (like a ball or a tug for example) and using it in a way that lets him discover that he likes it even more.

Drive is too abstract a subject lets narrow this down to one particular drive. Let's say prey drive. Most dogs have "some" prey drive as a puppy. And yes it is true that all the work in the world cannot increase something that is not genetically there. But if left dormant and not stimulated this drive diminishes. Ed has commented many times that he kept puppies with loads of prey drive that he did not have time to work and after some time he had to sell as pets. The drive was all but diminished. So our job as working dog handlers is to stimulate this drive to keep it active in our dogs. Hope this helped a bit.

Use it or lose it, right? I guess that makes sense. Thanks.
