I just began the Flinks approach with my 5 month old. Should I stop playing "regular" ball with her (throwing it)?

Normally, I throw the ball and she brings it back and drops it so I can throw it again.

Concern: When I approach to pet her, she often drops it and looks at me... as if she's expecting me to throw it.

Dave,

I train obedience with a ball (the Flinks' approach) and once we are done with obedience exercises I play with my dog by throwing the ball. I look at it as a reward and a great exercise for the dog. Dogs learn this routine very quickly--first the "silly" stuff (OB) and then the fun stuff (retrieves).

If I understand your concern correctly, you don't want her to drop the ball when you approach her. She does that to initiate/resume the play. Once the ball stops moving, it's of little interest to a dog. Try this: before you reach to pet her, grab the ball string and try to pull it out of her mouth--I bet she'll clamp on it. After a few sessions like this--voila!--you have created a new problem--the dog would not release . But that's easy to fix.

Thanks Renee, I wanted to make sure that there wasn't some unwritten rule the Flinks approach and throwing the ball.
