A little further interest in this phony.
On Amazon.com, under his book review, his fellow author needed to post to clear up all the lies that Sheilds had posted.
The co-author, Nancy West wrote the following:
".) Scott Shields refers to himself as 'Captain' because that is what others called him for many years on the waterfront in New York and Connecticut. This does not refer to any military or authoritative rank.
2.) Scott has emergency management training, but he and Bear did not have "official" or "professional" search and rescue (SAR) training.
3.) Bear did NOT accompany Scott to the WTC to do search work. He was there because he was always at Scott's side.
4.) Bear is NOT credited with making any live finds at the WTC.
5.) Bear did NOT find more victims than any other rescuer or canine. Many official search and rescue canine teams stayed and worked for weeks after Bear left. Presumably, these teams made many sad discoveries.
6.) Scott and Bear did NOT work at the Oklahoma City bombing rescue and recovery mission.
7.) Scott and Bear did NOT respond to the earthquake in Turkey.
8.) Theodorable is NOT Bear's son. At this time, Theodore is NOT a trained search and rescue dog. Theodore has been made an honorary 'mascot' in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He is NOT a Coast Guard SAR canine."

And Theodore (AKA Bears son) should NOT be allowed in public, this dog is dangerous, as I have witnessed on two separate occasions Theodore attacking other dogs and biting people, badly.
Mr. Shields commits an act of fraud just by calling himself a dog handler  .

Thank you Ed and others so much for posting this!
As someone who is active in an SAR unit that does an extensive amount of cadaver work, I was always extremely skeptical of the Scott Shields 9/11 "Bear the Hero" story. (Shields was not called to the scene by L/E, the dog was old, not part of an organized unit, etc.) And then he started asking for money for vet bills (gee, imagine a 12 year-old Golden getting cancer! Sad, but part of life.). Still, as with all dog problems, don't blame the dog - blame the rotten handler!
I'm so glad to see this finally exposed!

Rest assured that several entities are investigating Mr. Shields. I believe it is just a matter of time before charges are filed. However, I wanted to alert people to this in the meantime because he still is collecting donations and making public appearances. Additionally, if anyone has any information regarding illegal activity of Mr. Shields (impersonation, improper solicitation of funds, not paying bills/rent, etc.), I urge you to contact the proper authorities. I was deployed to hurricane katrina for 14 day with fltf2
we searched the lower ninth ward ,but we really could not use our dogs because the mud was knee to waist high and it would have been to dangerous for the dogs ,some I am sure might have used them in other section, I dont know all teams stayed in meteraie in the Saints indoor practice arena. have a good day Keith Earle

This morning I noticed that the web site for the Bear Search and Rescue Foundation has been "closed."

The message on the page now says, "Due to unforseen circumstances the Bear Search and Rescue Foundation has closed it's doors for good. Thank you all for your past support. "
I haven't confirmed yet what exactly is going on (whether he's been arrested or whatever), but I'll keep you all posted.
