Otis, the Fastest Boxer in Bowling Green, Kentucky

A week ago, Cindy went on a road trip to visit family in Kentucky. Her sister, Elizabeth, is a novice agility trainer. Cindy filmed her performance along with an amazing performance of a gentlemen in a wheel chair. Elizabeth finished 3rd in Novie. Leerburg doesn't do agility training DVDs (other than the one that was filmed in England back in the early 1990's). We simply don't have time to edit all of the DVDs we want in our area of dog sports. But with that said, agility is a great dog sport. It's a sport almost every dog and handler can train and compete in.

Dog Bite

Warning: these photos are very graphic!

We are always looking for photos of people who have been bitten by their dogs while trying to break up a dog fight. If you send us photos and the story on how the accident happened we will put them on our website with the hope that your mistakes will help other people realize how dangerous it is to try and break up a dog fight the wrong way.

Dog Bite:

Our pittie mix (a rescue from the dog rescue where I volunteer) has been best friends with our grown daughter’s pit for a year now. The other day, they were outside with a bone and began a vicious fight. Our dog and our daughter were hurt pretty bad before we were able to break it up. I wish we had read your website so we would have known how to handle the fight without getting hurt. My daughter was hurt pretty bad (see photos) during the fight when our dog bit her. We were very upset, ready to have her put down, even though she had never been aggressive before. I can’t have a dog that bites people with my grand kids around. We read your website and realized that she was not trying to hurt our daughter. Thank God, and you, that we now have tools to handle a fight if we should ever experience that again. My daughter and I are going to keep our dogs muzzled (both purchased from your site) any time they are near other dogs just to be sure this never happens again.

Thank you!

Randi

Question: Is it a myth that dog kibble food containing 42% protein can burn up a dog's kidneys?

Hey Ed,

Is it a myth that dog kibble food containing 42% protein can burn up a dog's kidneys? I am feeding my golden retriever conformation show dog Orijen dog food made by Champion Pets out of Canada. I chose this food because it is grain free, made from quality ingredients, and high in protein. My supposition is that it takes protein to grow the lush coat I am looking for in my 19 month old open female.

Thanks Ed,
Bill

Answer:

Typically, it’s processed low quality protein that is hard on a dog’s kidneys. I also feel that a dog that gets kidney disease has more issues than eating a high protein food. The quality and digestive availability of the components of the food are what tax the kidneys and other internal organs of our dogs.

Orijen is known to be one of the better kibbles, but with that said…. we don’t feel that kibble is appropriate food for our dogs. I have fed a raw diet since 1994 and would never go back to commercial kibble. If you must feed kibble then I would supplement with fresh added meat, fish, eggs and plain sugar free yogurt.

You may want to spend some time reading our Feeding dogs section of the website, it’s located on the left hand side under Dog Training Categories.

I hope this helps.

Question: Do you have a DVD that would help me teach my dog to bark on command?

Hi, my name is Jeff and I have purchased your DVDs on Pack Structure, Basic Obedience and Electric Collar Training. I have gone through all the videos except Electric Collar Training with success so far. I will be working on that next month. I am wondering if any of your other DVDs would help with what I'm looking for in my dog. I have a 13 month old female GS and I would like her to show aggression on command and off on command and the alert command. I do not want a dog with a bite command. Do you have any videos out there that would help me with that?

Cindy's Response:

Here’s an article that may help you, Training the Non-Biting Dog to Bark at the Door.

I hope this helps.

Hi Cindy,

I e-mailed you a while ago with questions re: feeding my vizsla with IBD. More than anything else, your probios probiotic powder has helped him. He hasn't had diarrhea in over a month now since we started him on it and for him that's amazing! It's finally easier to keep weight on him even though he is eating less now :) I did add the powder to an already well-rounded raw diet, based on Raw & Natural Nutrition for Dogs, which he had been doing alright on (certainly better than anything else we ever tried).

I also got a few more Michael Ellis DVDs for Christmas - definitely my best gift, thank you guys for all your work!

Thanks for all your time!
Jenn
