Leerburg's Online Teaching Engagement Skills Course

I thought the class was well thought out and well organized. I like that it was broken down into little bits of information that were easy to digest. The segments built on the previous ones.

I appreciated that I could take the class at my own pace, as I really had trouble finding two full weeks to give to it, but was able to stretch it out and still view all the materials and work with my dog on the different skills. We are already making significant progress.

Well worth the money. I have already been recommending the class to other dog owners who have engagement issues.

Question: My puppy is very reactive around other people and dogs so I went to my breeder for advice. She says I'm being too soft because Iím not correcting him & I need to instill "the fear of God into him." I'm following Michael Ellis's system so you can see why I'm confused.

I took my puppy to see the breeder last week actually to see if I could get a second opinion about his reactivity. The breeder says its a dominance issue and that I need to instill "the fear of god into him," which is why I'm looking for help else where. She says I'm reading him wrong and that I'm being way too soft on the dog by not giving it corrections and she says she breeds hard large dogs that will be more than I can handle unless I stop it now. I told her I'm following Michael Ellis system and she said "yeah, well, he breeds soft dogs not like mine, mine need to know that you can make the sky fall on them if they act stupid." You can see why I'm confused.

Cindy's Response:

I know there are breeders like that out there but I am going to disagree with her on this topic, especially since you are dealing with a puppy.

People like that are old school and I feel sorry for their dogs. I can assure you that Michael breeds plenty of "hard" dogs but having a hard dog doesn't mean you have to physically punish them into your way of thinking. That doesn't mean Michael doesn't use corrections, because he does. I like to think with a motivated dog (hard or soft) that I can make my ideas their ideas through a communication system based on fairness, trust and balance. I use rewards and a positive foundation but then introduce corrections later when it's fair to the dog. I don't use punishment and intimidation with a puppy to "put the fear of god into them." That's just bullying.

Does it work? Sure it does. Is it fair? I don't believe it is. To each his own I guess.

Thanks:

Thanks for the quick reply I will go back to basics and re-work engagement and keep the sessions short and simple.
