Q&A with Michael Ellis: My dog only has food drive, will the Focused Heeling DVD still work for him?

Q&A with Michael Ellis: My dog only has food drive,
will the Focused Heeling DVD still work for him?

I'm interested in the Focused Heeling DVD, I have a few questions. My dog only has food drive, although it's a very strong food drive. Will this be a problem for that training? Will tugs be involved in the Focused Heeling training? Your site has jute tugs that can be filled with food, would that be a good thing to use to teach my terrier mix to like tugs? I'm also wondering if the DVD would be good for dog owners not engaged in any competition heeling.

Dog Bite

Warning: these photos are very graphic!

We are always looking for photos of people who have been bitten by their dogs while trying to break up a dog fight. If you send us photos and the story on how the accident happened we will put them on our website with the hope that your mistakes will help other people realize how dangerous it is to try and break up a dog fight the wrong way.

Dog Bite:

I tried to separate my 2, normally friendly, dogs from fighting and it resulted in me getting bit. I wish I would have read your article first.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not 100% sure what happened. My best guess is this:

We have 3 dogs Lola (shar pei, pit bull, boxer mix), we adopted her at 8 weeks old, now almost 4 years old. Molly is dog #2, as best we can tell she is a fox hound mix. We adopted Molly when she was around a year old, but no one really knows because she was a stray. When she came into our home back in Sept 2010, she was under weight and very aggressive with her food. So, I started feeding her as much as she would eat, the food aggression went away very quickly, now she is a healthy 62 lbs. The only issue I notice with her is that if a new toy is brought into the house, she wants it right away and will take it from the other dogs, and the other dogs will let her have it. 6 weeks ago we brought a new puppy into the home, Suka a pure bred lab. All 3 dogs appear to be getting along well, chasing and playing without any aggressive behavior. Yesterday I bought Suka a soft bone designed for puppies to chew on. When Suka was done with it then we placed it in her kennel and closed the door so the other dogs would leave it alone. Molly was very focused on the bone pawing at Suka's kennel trying to get at it. Lola went over to see what Molly was doing and Molly went after Lola. I let it go on for a moment, then pulled Lola's collar to get her away from Molly. (My big mistake) Molly came up and got my arm, but released it right away. I didn't scream or yell because this seemed to stop Molly in her tracks. I then kenneled both dogs, separately of course and the bone went directly into the trash. After an hour in their kennel we let them out one at a time and all seems to be back to normal.

Question: Is the streaming video of the DVD I just purchased available because I bought the DVD or will I need to pay for the streaming video?

My question is this, I bought a DVD "8 weeks to 8 months" then went to a link that said watch your "streaming video," is this available to me because I bought the DVD or will it charge me another 40 dollars if I watch the streaming video?

Thank you,
Brad

Question: My GSD will chase down my other dog and sack her when they are running. I’m considering using the ecollar, but I don’t want to diminish her prey drive. Is it OK to use the collar for this?

Dear Ed and Cindy,

I have a problem occurring between my 8 MO. GSD, and my 1 YO. Siberian Husky. This problem only occurs when I'm at the off leash dog park with them. The problem is when my husky starts getting ahead of my GSD, my GSD will chase her down and sack her. By the time my GSD catches up to the husky, they are traveling pretty fast. This is not a mutual, back and forth game that they play. It seems as if my GSD is preying, or maybe she just wants to be in control. Either way, I don't want it happening. I don't want to extinguish her prey drive. I'm considering using an electronic collar, but I'm not sure when the correction should be given, and if I should use an avoidance correction or what. My question is this, do you think this is an OK circumstance under which to use an electric collar?

Cindy's Response:

I have 2 dogs that behave this way. My young male “t bones” my older female when we are out on a walk off leash.

I use the ecollar for this, whenever my male stops and locks his attention on to my other dog or starts running at her, I say NO and use the collar. This won’t have any effect on prey drive, this is a dominance thing between dogs and it’s actually how my dogs have injured themselves in the past.

If you haven’t used a collar before, I’d recommend viewing Electric Collar Training for the Pet Owner.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Rhodes

Thanks:

Dear Cindy,

Thank you very much for your insight! I wasn't sure if I would find anyone who has had the same experience as me, and would know how to deal with it, but you came through in a clinch!

Thank you so much.

- Sam

Customer Comments

Dear Mr. Frawley

First I would like to thank you for your website and your expertise in just having a dog. For the first time, I can say, I am my dog's pack leader. As you say, the training courses we get, lack the information on just that. They who arrange these training courses in my country, Norway that is, they make their money by keeping this information for themselves. Good business for them, bad business for the dogs. These dogs have to live a whole lifetime insecure, and that makes me sad.

Now, I have a dog who doesn't care about anything other than me, and I am always relaxed in every situation. Send my greetings to Cindy, your staff and of course Mr. Ellis and thank them to.

I hope I can make my goals with my dog, a boxer with working bloodlines (yes, they do exist, hehe). I have taken my handler-skills to a higher level by following you, buying your DVDs and keeping an open mind for learning. We are training for IPO, we have other people around us, who share the same mentalities about dog handling, and I believe we will make results.

Thank you again, and sorry for my spelling mistakes ;)
