Leerburg Q&A

Featured Question & Answers

Question: My pup eats everything... toys, socks, underwear. We try to keep things picked up but he still finds them. What can we do?

I have a 5 month old Goldendoodle that picks up everything he finds. He swallowed a 12" long stuff-less toy about a month ago that had to be removed surgically. He loves socks and underwear, and yesterday he got a hold of one of my daughters headbands, but fortunately he vomited up this morning. We try to keep things picked up but he just seeks them out. What can we do? I don't want another $2800 vet bill.

Thanks,
Tim

Cindy's Response:

There can sometimes be a medical reason for this obsessive behavior, called pica.

It’s sometimes related to digestive issues or other medical conditions, that cause the dog to crave & eat non food items. A google search on "pica in dogs" will turn up a lot of info. You have to rule out a medical reason for the pup eating these items before you can consider it a behavioral issue.

I’d keep this dog safely in a crate, an exercise pen or on a leash attached to me ALL the time so I could correct any attempt to pick up a non food item. The more you let him have his freedom, the more likely this will continue to be a problem.

Exercise & training are also going to help, if it’s not a medical problem.

I’d recommend the videos Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 Months and Pack Structure for the Family Pet.

I’d definitely keep this pup supervised at all times, and teach the Yuck command (covered on our website). We also have a great question & answer section you can type in your question and find more info.

I hope this helps.

Question: I’m thinking of rescuing a cat, would they eat the same raw diet as a dog? Can they chew bones?

Hi Cindy,

I’ve been seriously thinking of rescuing a cat, there’s so many homeless ones where I am. Would their diet be similar to a species appropriate diet for dogs, some meat, giblets, and bones? Can they chew bones?? I have no clue.

Anita

Cindy's Response:

I feed all my cats a premade ground raw food made by Bravo because some of my older ones don’t consume whole bones.

I believe there are some raw books out there specifically for cats. We used to carry them but didn’t sell enough to justify keeping them in stock.

Here’s the title we used to stock, Natural Nutrition for Cats. I hope this helps.

Cindy Rhodes

Thanks:

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! This should be more than enough, I’ll definitely check out this book! It’s because of you that my dog’s whole life changed for the better. I’m so glad I found you people.

Cindy's Response:

Glad I could help! Thanks for the kind words.

Customer Comments

Dear Cindy:

Wanted to give you a success story to post. I followed all the advise you gave on raising my german shepherd lab mix puppy. Everything worked exactly like Ed said it would. People thought I was crazy to keep my dog on a leash in the house and attached to the chair I was sitting in. She had only 2 accidents in the house(which were our fault). Dog ownership is SOOOOOO easy with a well behaved, trained dog. We rarely have to discipline her. She is eager to please and with your guidance we showed her how to please us. SHE IS AWESOME. This was our first family dog and if I had known how easy it was to train a dog we would have started sooner with a family pet.

Thank you so much! She lives to catch a frisbee and fetch her soccer and football. She is such a blessing in our lives and I encourage anyone to take your advise. It Works.

"Sadie" is now 2 years old and the best dog I have ever met.

Thanks again!!!! I have attached a photo as well.

Sara
