Leerburg's Online Teaching Engagement Skills Course

This course was PERFECT! From novice to pro this course can benefit both. Forrest is very easy to learn from. He has a way of not only Engaging a dog but also a human. The video's along with the written text were a very helpful tool. I do hope that this course comes out on DVD so that I can purchase it and have it on hand when I need it. It never hurts to revisit something that you once learned. I found that even though I knew, I also was failing in a few areas and now can repair them and have better success.

Question: Is Honest Kitchen Preference plus cooked meat a balanced diet for a growing German Shepherd puppy?

Would you recommend Honest Kitchen Preference + meat for a 10 month old German Shepherd weighing in at 80lbs? Would this be balanced for a growing puppy? Or is it best to feed one of their "balanced formulas" until he reaches full maturity?

If so, is it OK to just add a variety of cooked meats with it and that is all? I would also supplement with fish oil/vitamin E, as usual.

Thank you!

Cindy's Response:

I would probably recommend one of the balanced formulas (Embark is first choice for pups) until he's more mature. Of course if the choice is Preference vs. Kibble I would choose Preference over a highly processed food.

For a growing pup, even if I was feeding one of the complete formulas I would still likely add extra meat, the directions for how much extra to add is on the package. I would recommend keeping the meat raw if possible and if your dog can tolerate it. Cooking meat destroys the enzymes that are so important.

You could rotate the formulas for greater nutritional diversity, as well. We also have a q & a section on Honest Kitchen.

On Leerburg's Ventlock Tailgate Lock

I use my Ventlocks all the time with my minivan. They work really well and it's so nice to be able to leave my van locked and still allow significant air flow. I have the longest Ventlock and also the 6" length so that I have a choice depending on the situation. Of course, all necessary precautions must still be used, i.e. parking only in the shade and only leaving dogs unattended in a car on cool days, etc. I highly recommend these for people who travel with dogs.
