Training Touch Pads with Michael Ellis

Training Touch Pads with Michael Ellis
Exerpts from our new DVD, Training the Jumps with Michael Ells,
that will be released in late November.

In the begining of training the jump, trainers use a raised touch pad like our Rubber Touch Tubs. The reason for this is that it is very obvious when the dog has to put his feet up on a raised touch pad. As training progresses, we add an additional flat touch pad on top of the raised touch pad with the intention of eliminating the raised touch pad. In the end, our goal will be for the dog to go from one flat touch pad to another flat touch pad.

For those that are interested, Michael has 2 openings in his puppy class next week at his school in California.

The Power of Training Dogs with Food

The Power of Training Dogs with Food DVD

This is the first DVD in the Building Drive and Focus Series with Michael Ellis.

The foundation of Michael's dog training system lies in marker training. The power of Michael's system lies in how markers are applied within his training program. Unlike trainers who claim they can train every dog with 100% positive motivational methods, we know for a fact that corrections should have a place in any serious dog training program. They are required to guarantee reliability under distractions.

The beauty of Michael's system is that it establishes a method of communication with our dogs that is built on positive reinforcement. It is a communication system that is "black and white" to our dogs. This work builds a non-confrontational relationship with a dog. Because it is non-confrontational and based on positive reinforcement it is perfect for 8 week old puppies or 5 year old dominant and aggressive dogs. It's the perfect system to build or repair a relationship with a dog.

Our DVDs use untrained dogs and untrained handlers

The first two DVDs in this series (the second The Power of Playing Tug with Your Dog) covers the foundation of Michael's training system.

Both of these DVDs were produced with untrained dogs. Unlike other training videos where the training shown is only demonstrated with a trained dog - we chose to only use untrained dogs and untrained handlers.

I edited the training to show Michael demonstrating his training concept and I then fill the DVD with with examples of both untrained dogs and handlers learning the system. There is no question in my mind that people learn more from watching others make mistakes and then learning how to fix those mistakes.

Question: My 6 month old bites me when I put on his leash, what can I do?

Thank you for your website-it's terrific.

My German Sheppard puppy was very bitey and we used your website's recommendations to curb it.  He's mostly grown out of it at 6 months BUT whenever I put his leash on or off his mouth is all over my hands/forearms. Not aggressively but very annoying. I've tried increasingly harder corrections (No! or a hard pop on the leash) and this will work but only for that instant. The next time he's biting me again.  Any suggestions to help this?
Thank you very much.

Answer:

Give him an alternate behavior to do when you put his leash on, like giving you eye contact. Many dogs like the physical interactions that we see as corrections. He’s mouthing you because he’s excited, so teach him some self control.

When your dog (AND YOU) know and understand markers you are going to be able to tell him the EXACT instant he does something correctly or just as important the exact instant he does something wrong.

Markers opens a level of communication between you and your dog that was never available when we all started training dogs many years ago. We have a free 85 Page eBook titled THE POWER OF TRAINING DOGS WITH MARKERS. It’s on the web site in the list of eBook on my web site. This is the place to start.

I would also recommend you go to the free streaming videos on the web site and watch the lecture of Michael Ellis where he talks about his philosophy of dog training. Not only will you learn a lot you will understand why we are doing a series of training DVDs with Michael.

I would also read our biting puppies article.

For future questions, you might benefit from learning to use our SEARCH function, which is located in the top left corner of every page of the website. If you type in your key words or question it will find you articles, Q & A’s, free streaming video and links to threads on our discussion forum. Our website has over 16,000 pages and it’s very likely you’ll find the information you are looking for. I hope this helps.

Good luck

Cindy Rhodes

Question: My dog is becoming more and more aggressive towards other dogs. What could be causing this to happen?

Hello,

I'm hoping you can answer a question for me. We have been taking our very sweet and gentle hound mix to the dog park for the last six months. However, in the last month there has been a change in her behavior. She is becoming more and more aggressive toward other dogs, in particular smaller dogs. Also, she is becoming more and more disobedient.

We have cut the dog park out of her life now. I'm wondering what could be causing this to happen though?

Thank you for any information you might have.

Paul

Answer:

What you are seeing with your dog is typical and normal dog behavior. Dog parks are a great idea, BUT unfortunately the reality is that dogs don’t need to socialize and play with dogs outside their family pack. This is more an idea that appeals to people, and I would NEVER take my dog to a dog park.

I suggest you read this article on dog parks.

There are links within the article to other information and recommendations for training materials.

Hello Cindy and Ed,

I just wanted to thank you so much for all the wonderful training DVDs and products you offer. I have recently purchased all the DVDs that you made with Michael Ellis. They are so wonderful and easy to follow. I have grown up with German Shepherds, and have always enjoyed working with them, but I have learned so much from these DVDs. I just taught my 11 month old female Ava to "hold" things and we are working on the dumbbell retrieve. It is so much fun! I have attached a picture of her happily holding her basket.

Thanks again,
Daina
