Michael Ellis Working with Havok

Michael Ellis Working with Havok

Scott Kapphahn is a good friend of ours and his dog Havok is a Loups De Soliel dog from the H litter. Havok is a litter mate to Hudson, the dock diving dog sponsored by Leerburg. This last weekend after the Michael Ellis e-collar seminar that was held here at Leerburg, Michael was able to do some bite work and see how his progeny was progressing. Scott also lives in the back woods of northern MN and his wife has never been able to make it to any seminar or training to see Havok do bite work. We filmed this footage for Anny, Scott's wife, to see what their friendly house dog was capable of.

Leerburg Q&A
Ask your training question here

Question: I have an 11 week old GSD puppy from strong working lines and he's very smart and catches on to things quickly. I'm interested in training him to be a good companion and personal protection dog, which videos would you recommend? You have so many, I'm a little confused on where to start.

I have a 11 week old GSD that comes from strong working lines. So far he's one of the best puppies I've ever had. Super smart and catches on to everything very fast.

I see you have a ton of videos... And I'm interested in purchasing whatever ones I need, but I'm a little confused on where to start. I was thinking your video "Establishing Pack Structure with Your Puppy."

I did notice he's a little more "nippy than other puppies I've had."

Can you recommend the videos I should start with??? Do you have a package deal I should get and go through them one by one? The breeder has a training program, but I'm a little far away and was thinking I should start the basics at home and when more serious training is called for start making the drive.

I'm looking for him to be a good companion and personal protection dog... I'm getting more and more interested in the service dog sports as I go.

Regards

Cindy's Response:

For puppies, I'll list my recommendations.

Right now I'd suggest:
Establishing Pack Structure with your Puppy DVD
Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months DVD
The Power of Training with Food DVD
The Foundation of Puppy Bite Work DVD

This will get you on the right path for whatever future training you choose to do. I have several others to recommend too, but these will keep you busy for now. :)

Keep in mind that your puppy will likely begin teething around 16 weeks or so, and then we recommend you take a short break from biting/tugging games until the new teeth are in. We don't want our puppies to have any negative associations with tugging games due to a sore mouth.

As for the biting, we have a number of eBooks about puppies here.

I hope this helps.

On Leerburg's Establishing Pack Structure with the Family Pet DVD

Just a note to say thanks for the great website and DVD "Establishing Pack Structure with the Family Pet."

I rescued an 85 lb. bundle of love Labrador named Lola, and she's perfect with everyone - except other dogs. After an incident in which she (on leash) was confronted by a barking dog (off leash) and dragged me behind her to pin the other dog to the ground, I was afraid that it was hopeless.

I found your DVD, and have started to work with her while waiting for her crate to arrive. What a difference! In less than a week, she's learned not to charge through the door, and I'm learning how to be a calm, effective "pack leader." We both have a lot to learn, but I'm sure we'll go far.

I will tell every dog owner I meet about your website!

Thanks so much! You've helped save a really great dog!
