Emergency Tools

In this short video, Michael Ellis discusses the differences between spatial pressure and social pressure. He also discusses how and why he uses social pressure sparingly in order to have it as a backup in emergency situations, such as a potential dog fight.

Leerburg's Online Basic Dog Obedience Course

For me the most important aspect of balanced dog training was the necessity to control and manage all the different environments and distractions that can happen to a dog and handler. As a new trainer for my dogs it puts stress on me to go into new areas with them, now I am more secure and aware of what to look for and how to handle situations that might come up. I am definitely a component of reward-based balanced training and will be using this system with my dogs from now on out. I live in the Deep South where trainers still use compulsion training. I just don't like it. The dogs aren't happy. Reward- Based balanced training gives a dog an opportunity to grow in confidence, courage and intelligence and nothing could be better for all involved. Thank you for this opportunity. I hope to be able to take future classes as I progress in my abilities.

Ask your training question

Question: My son has a laser light and my 10 month old dog loves chasing the light. Now she's constantly looking for lights and shadows all the time. Is there a way to train her out of this?

I have a 10 month old GSD from a strong Czech and German working lines. She's doing quite well in her bite training. About two months ago my sons got some of those laser lights and started playing with the dog. The dog loved chasing the lights and would jump up and stomp on the light with both feet which everyone thought was funny. This went on for about two weeks and then I put a stop to it because the dog was becoming obsessed looking for the lights constantly. It's been at least two months now but the dog still searches constantly for the lights or any shadows when she is in he house. She now stomps on shadows. Is there a way to train this out of her?

Cindy's Response:

Once this obsession is created it’s very difficult to deal with. I despise those laser lights for this very reason. I’ve seen a couple really nice dogs ruined by this, one went so far as to leave the helper on the bite work field to chase shadows.

I wouldn’t let her have the freedom to search the house, I’d keep her under strict supervision (on leash).

My suggestion is to try to interrupt the behavior and give her something else to focus on. Teach her to give you eye contact on command and mark and reward it. It’s a tough issue, I don’t know if it’s possible to extinguish the behavior permanently, even with corrections.

I would read our article on training dogs with markers & keep her busy with little tasks when she’s not kenneled or working.

On Leerburg's Educator Pro Expandable Remote Collar

I have tried about every brand of e-collar on the market so I speak not only from 30 years of dog training experience but also one who has seen the good and bad in these collars. I am very happy to say that I am 100% satisfied with this system. I say "system" because it gives you so many options. You can use one collar or up to 3 and and control them quickly with one remote. When I first started setting up my transmitter and two receivers I had a little trouble understanding the process so I called the company. My questions were answered quickly and correctly to get me up and running. I like the fact that you can do so many things with the buttons and settings. Hard corrections, tones, vibrations ... you name it. I think Educator is the new leader in e-collar technology and I only wish we had this many options years ago. If I lost my system today would I invest in another one? Yes! I would order it the same day.
