Q. What do you expect from a good (working) puppy to show you before you treat him as a mature dog and not as a puppy?
Hello Ed,

I work in the Israeli swat in puppy program for special forces.

We have few malinois puppies in different ages, and we have some disagreement between us about the best age to put real pressure from a decoy on the puppy/dog,

I'll be glad if you can answer from your experience with puppies and young dogs, what are you expect from a good (working) puppy to show you before you treat him as a mature dog and not as a puppy.

What are the cues we need to see to say it's not a puppy anymore, and we can treat this young as a mature dog.

Thanks a lot,
Sharon

A. I don’t believe that there is any one quality you need to see in order to begin working the puppy as an adult dog. I want to see confidence in all areas of the puppy’s interactions with his environment and with people. In training, I want to make sure the dog is working in bite work with a full grip and only moving forward. Around the house, I want to see the dog becoming territorial and I like a puppy that walks around with tail UP all the time, acting like he owns the place.

A submissive puppy or a puppy that doesn’t have a lot of natural self confidence will need more foundation work to be successful as a working dog (in our experience).

It’s really a hard question to answer in an email. I hope this helps.

This tape is directed towards the real world where police departments or professional dog trainers contracted by police departments do not have years to finish the training on a dog before it goes out on the street. It is not uncommon to take a selection tested dog and finish him in 6 to 12 weeks (depending on the dog, the department and what is expected before the dog is allowed to work). For this reason the bark & hold training needs to be done quickly. The training methods in this video have that in mind.

This video is 1 Hour and 20 Minutes long and takes the viewer step by step through muzzle fighting. The reason we chose the term muzzle fighting is because there is a real difference between what we show in this video and what happens when someone just throws a muzzle on a dog and sends him after a helper without a sleeve. If a dog is genetically capable of muzzle fighting, we will show you how to train it to use its body to knock out an individual.

I went to my first Schutzhund seminar in October 1974. I was instantly hooked on protection dog training. During the next 10 years I went to every seminar I could find in this country on training protection dogs, Schutzhund dogs, and police service dogs. In 1983 I produced my first bite training video titled "Protection Training the Beginning with Bernhard Mannel." In the 13 years that followed I learned so much more about protection training that I was forced to update that old video and pass this new information on to my customers. This is being done through this new training tape "The First Steps of Bite Training."

This is a DVD done with Bernhard Flinks, Bernhard is a German police officer and Schutzhund competitor. This video shows how Bernhard teaches people to bring their dog up to its genetic potential of drive (every dog has its own potential for drive). It's through "drive training" that the relationship between the handler and dog is established.

This video was done with the RCMP in Canada. In it we train a dog to track in a suburban and urban environment. In Level 1 Tracking (Video 205) we taught the dog to track in the country. The reason all police dogs must first learn to track in the country is because the country is relatively distraction free. We actually teach the dog to track in the country and then use a large part of that work to train in Level II & III teaching the dog to deal with the distractions of the city.
