Can I use the Tritronics Bark Limiter and prong collar together to work on my dog’s reaction to other dogs?

Full Question:
Good afternoon Cindy,

Will you tell me if I can use the Bark Limiter while my dog has a prong collar on?

My dog barks and pulls in reaction to dogs on the opposite sides of the fence, as well as dogs/critters that he sees in the distance. The prong collar and dominant dog collar are good together when he is in regular walking mode, but seem to have no affect when he goes into high drive. I was thinking that if we can have the immediate correction when he barks of the Bark Limiter, then I can challenge the other behavior and put him in correction with the prong collar.

What are your thoughts?

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
You could use it while the dog is wearing the prong, but honestly if you are with the dog on leash, I would suggest correcting the dog in a different way. I would not use the bark collar in the manner in which you are suggesting. The bark collar offers a higher level correction than a normal remote collar and there could be a case that the dog would get the correction from the bark collar and redirect with aggression to you (if you are simultaneously restraining him with a leash). I use the bark collar when my dog is either in a crate or out in a fenced yard unattended. That way the correction is timed perfectly even if I am not around to deal with the issue.

If you are with the dog and have him on a leash, I’d recommend the electric collar as opposed to a bark collar.

We have an excellent video on how to train a dog with the electric collar called Electric Collar Training for the Pet Owner. If you are leaving the dog in a crate or in the yard off leash, I’d recommend Tri-Tronics Bark Limiter.

If you haven’t watched this video, Dealing with Dominant & Aggressive Dogs I would suggest doing that first and working through the work with the dominant dog collar (before going to the ecollar).
