I need help with the send out. Any ideas?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy,

I need help with the send out. I bought the Ellis video. My dog used to have a great send out, and will do it in training, but refused to go out in my last 3 trials. I thought I had it fixed before this last weekend. He did practice send out fine, then would not go in the trial. Any ideas?

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Since I haven’t watched you train and I don’t know how you prep your dog for the trial, I’m going to just throw some ideas out there. You don’t say what kind of trouble you were having with the send out but I see that you only purchased the Send Away video one month ago. Whenever you are RE-training something, it may take many MANY months of repetition to override the old behaviors. I have retrained a lot of exercises over the years, and none of them were trial ready in a month (even with daily work).

I think maybe you are rushing it a bit. Of course, I can only guess but it’s a common thing to test a trained behavior too soon. The send out is a big chunk of points, so I’d take your time fixing it.

I am actually retraining heeling right now, I let my dog forge too much when I was doing ringsport and I now want to do competitive obedience. Not only will it probably take me a year to really fix this, I had to change the verbal cue. Dogs relate to the cue they know so if you want to retrain your send away, I’d start over with a new command. I used to say Heel for my heeling, now I say Let’s Go. If I say Heel he automatically refers to default forging behavior that he had received reinforcement for 2 plus years.

I hope this helps somehow. :)

User Response:
Thanks Cindy. I like the new command idea. You are right...I need to give it more time.

Thanks,
Mike
