Are joint oats or grand flex appropriate for my dog?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy,

I have a question about your supplements, one is the Joint Oats for dogs the other is the Grand Flex. Out of those 2 which would you recommend for my dog? She is a 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd and very active. Also does either one have a flavor?

Thanks,
Wadd

Does your dog have a joint issue? What are you feeding her? Thanks!

User Response:
Hi Cindy,

My girl friend e-mailed you on the supplements and we're not sure about joint problems yet, but by her actions it might be a sign she does.

I am sad to say she is eating Blue Wilderness grain free Kibble with cooked chicken, beef, or lamb added into the kibble. I am still trying to get my girlfriend to let me feed raw but even after all my research gathered and books I have not had any success at convincing her yet.

As for Zoey, she is slow at getting up in the evening after lying down for a nap/rest and limps slightly for a few steps but after a few shes seems ready to go again. Everything I've read on hip dysplasia that seems to be the first thing said about potential problems with the hips.

We did have her x rayed at a younger age for her hips and at that time the vet said there wasn't a problem but I've read that it's hard to detect at a younger age and it should be done at 2 years of age. I'm guessing that being almost 3 it will still be a good time to have it done.

I am planning on getting some quality x rays and possibly having the OFA doing a phenotypic evaluation done. Ssounds expensive?

Thanks for the quick reply.
I've been meaning to get on the forum about this.

Thanks,
Joe

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Until you know the status of your dog's joints & overall health, I think I'd hold off on offering advice on supplementation. From your description, I would get her to a vet now. I would not wait. It's not normal for a dog this young to be limping. What if she has an injury? It could also be something unrelated to her joints (i.e. Lyme disease).

Good luck at the vet.
