We just moved to a house without a fenced yard and now have to take the dog out on a leash, but she won't go. How do I make her go to the bathroom outside?

Full Question:
Hi,

This question seemed a little too in depth, I wasn't finding an answer in the database... my parents' dog is a little older and we recently moved to a new house. At our old house we had a fenced in yard where she was just let out to go to the bathroom. At our new house though she has to be on a leash. The problem is when I take her out she won't go. I was out side the other day about five times each in 20 minute increments and twice when she came in she immediately pooped on the carpet. In addition we started putting puppy pads down, at first she was going on them but now she isn't. How do I make her go to the bathroom outside?

Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
When moving to a new home or location, you need to treat a dog like this as if she was a new puppy and limit her access to the house. Don’t let her out of your sight in the house, use a crate and a leash at all times. Start over housetraining like she IS NOT trained (which she actually isn’t, if she’s going in the house) She’ll need to be taught to go to the bathroom on leash. this is hard for dogs who have spent their lives going off leash, but with consistency she can be taught.

We have a section on the website about house training.

We also have a number of eBooks, which include topics that may help you. One of them is on housetraining problems (which includes retraining adult dogs).
