I'd like to know where you got your three wheeled bike? Can you use the dog harness (pole) that attaches to the main handle bar?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy,

I'd like to know where you got your three wheeled bike?

I've got a 110 pound three year old female Rottie, we walk an hour a day approximately 3 and a half miles.

I wanted to get a bike but I am not sure how long or how far I should run my dog. I was also afraid my dog might pull me over on a two wheeled bike.

Can you use the dog harness (pole) that attaches to the main handle bar?

Any information will be helpful.

Thanks,
Gwen

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I got my bike locally, the brand is a Sun recumbent trike. You can google it.

We just filmed some footage of me riding with my adult Malinois, it will be in an upcoming newsletter in the next week or two. If you have any doubt about your dog’s joint health, I would definitely have hip and elbow xrays done before running her on a regular basis.

Rush (my dog) is under the care of a sports medicine vet for an injury he sustained a year ago and she recommended that my dog run no more than 6 miles three times a week. I started with 1.5 miles each time and increased by ½ mile each week. I think if you have any question about your dog’s fitness level or ability to jog with a bike, I’d recommend a vet check before starting. You also want to be aware of their pads. I run Rush on grass or packed dirt, if he had to run on pavement regularly I’d find some way to protect his paws.

I don’t attach Rush to the bike, I hold his harness or he trots next to me and I have a light leash on his prong collar. I wouldn’t want to injure either of us, in case of some unforeseen incident. Being attached to the bike seems dangerous to me.
