Q. Can you maybe give me some advice about how I can teach my pup that playing with other people (me, my boyfriend and so on) is fun?
Dear Ed and Cindy,

14 days ago we picked up a GSD puppy (12 weeks). The dog is playing and playing... He runs around the house with his ball and his Kong but as soon you start to play with him he freeze and just stared at you. He is also not willing to play outside (walking is fine, meeting new people and new dogs is also not a problem and he is not scared for cars, buses, trains or whatever).

Can you maybe give me some advice about how I can teach him that playing with other people (me, my boyfriend and so on) is fun?

Nadine

A. If you want the puppy to play with you, then you need to pick up the toys and teach him to interact with you. He’s getting all his play satisfaction by himself right now.

I’d recommend the following:
Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 Months
The Power of Training Dogs with Food
The Power of Playing Tug with your Dog
Advanced Concepts of Motivation

Playing outside will come with time and training, he needs to build a play relationship with you inside with no distractions first.

This is the latest in Leerburgs series of training videos done with Michael Ellis. It is a training video that follows Michaels curriculum for his course on Motivation and Play at his school for dog trainers in California. The work in this DVD (or video on demand) teaches trainers of all breeds (large and small) and trainers from every dog sport (agility, obedience, and protection sports) the advanced concepts of how to motivate their dogs. The goal of this training is to teach dog trainers how to turn a reward into an event for their dog. When trainers can learn these skills they are going to be able to manipulate the motivation and drive of their dogs.

This is one of our most popular training videos for new puppy owners. Over 35 years Ed Frawley bred close to 400 litters of German Shepherd puppies. He knows what new puppy owners need to learn to end up with a calm quiet happy dog in the house. The DVD was updated in October 2010 to reflect how Ed and Cindy raise puppies in their home.

Here are the reasons we love this tug: Your hands don't get bit as much, there is room for two hands and the dogs mouth. There are no handles for the dog to self satisfy into on the OUT training. It's firm but not so hard that it causes teeth problems (like kevlar or fire hose tugs). It's smooth, so it easily slides into and out of your back pocket or training vest. It's only 1 1/2 inches in diameter so it easily goes into pockets. Our DOGS LOVE THEM.
