I just noticed my dog has a balding area not quite at the base of her tail. My husband usually bathes her and said she has had this for a while but is getting worse. What would you suggest?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy,

Our golden is going on 9 years old and will be 10 in May. I just noticed she has a balding area not quite at the base of her tail, a little bit further down the tail. My husband usually bathes her and said she has had this for a while but is getting worse (larger area).

Stats:
She doesn't bite at it and it has no unusual attributes to it other than the hair is gone.
Doesn't appear to be tender to the touch and not swollen. I checked.
There are no other areas like this on her.
Doesn't look like mange or a parasite issue? No fleas?
It's not ringworm. Been there with another pet.
She eats normal, playful, etc..especially with the Syn-Flex!
No abnormal or unusual behavior in any way. Personality very normal.
I believe she has arthritis.
I feed her raw. Great appetite.
Gums are a good pink color.
She's a field golden from working lines, so she has always had a thin coat of fur.
No kidney disease symptoms.
She doesn't drink much water which is normal for her so I hydrate her food up quite a bit.
She gets the supplements you suggested for arthritis, a little raw garlic, and salmon oil.
She had a dental ordeal about a year ago and had all the work ups done then. Everything seemed okay other than the dental issue at the time.
No symptoms to support a thyroid problem, diabetes, or even lyme disease.

We are always concerned about lyme disease. We've only had one tick that had latched on without us catching it and that was over a year ago during which she did not manifest any symptoms of lyme disease. I don't do the flea/tick pesticide treatments. She's not outside much and most of the yard is sunny.

She's ageing quickly but seems happy and comfortable. I know she has allergies and often a runny nose. I read about a Vitamin B deficiency. Do you think that might have any merit here and do you have a supplement you'd recommend for that?

Thanks,
Sara

PS. I did check out your list of holistic vets and when need be, there is one in Smithfield. We're new out here and I've heard some bad things about vets. Most probably wouldn't be happy with me either for not having vaccinated in years.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Hair loss can be a symptom of thyroid issues. I’d have a thyroid panel done just to have a baseline value. An aging dog could use a good check up anyway.

I’d try the holistic vet for this.
