Q. I'm experiencing some equipment bias with my dog. The tug video mentions this, but could you further explain what I should do to fix this?
This is mentioned in the tug DVD with Michael Ellis. There is a trainer, Rhonda, I believe, that has a 7 month old female that will not play with her with the tug but engages when she slips on the puppy sleeve... Ed mentions that Rhonda was able to correct this with some hard work.... but it's never revealed what that actually was... I have the same problem that I created out of ignorance (this is my first dog) and I'd like to work on correcting it. Thx

A. Basically, you need to spend time working on the items your dog isn’t as fond of to have all your fun. I’d put away the equipment the dog is biased towards and work on the same exercises with the other items. You may need to lower your criteria when playing with an item the dog doesn’t like as much. I want my dogs to play with me anywhere, anytime, with anything. This is accomplished by making the interaction about the play as opposed to about the actual item. The activity and interaction with me should be more important to the dog than the actual item.

I’d also recommend the newer motivation video, Advanced Concepts in Motivation.

I hope this helps.

This is the latest in Leerburgs series of training videos done with Michael Ellis. It is a training video that follows Michaels curriculum for his course on Motivation and Play at his school for dog trainers in California. The work in this DVD (or video on demand) teaches trainers of all breeds (large and small) and trainers from every dog sport (agility, obedience, and protection sports) the advanced concepts of how to motivate their dogs. The goal of this training is to teach dog trainers how to turn a reward into an event for their dog. When trainers can learn these skills they are going to be able to manipulate the motivation and drive of their dogs.

Here are the reasons we love this tug: Your hands don't get bit as much, there is room for two hands and the dogs mouth. There are no handles for the dog to self satisfy into on the OUT training. It's firm but not so hard that it causes teeth problems (like kevlar or fire hose tugs). It's smooth, so it easily slides into and out of your back pocket or training vest. It's only 1 1/2 inches in diameter so it easily goes into pockets. Our DOGS LOVE THEM.
