Our rescue dog, who has hookwork, keeps going to the bathroom in the house. Could this problem be associated with the intestinal parasites messing with her digestion?

Full Question:
Hello,

I have just adopted a 2-3 year-old female cairn terrier (the shelter was not exactly sure on her age). She has had her array of problems so far. She had fleas that I believe lead to her developing her Hookworm problem. The vet put her on panacure-c for the next 3 days and her frontline medication just came in that we will apply today.

My problem is that she keeps pooping and peeing in the house. We keep her confined to the kitchen in the day with 2-3 hour time frames in her crate as well as keeping her in the crate at night for about 8 hours. She goes on about 4-5 walks a day: in the morning, at 12, at 4, at 8, and sometimes right before she goes to bed around 11. In the morning there will be poop all over her blanket in her crate.

Could this problem just be associated with the intestinal parasites messing with her digestion? Because prior to her parasites, she would only make a mess occasionally not every night

Thanks for all your help!

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Intestinal parasites can definitely cause digestive issues and diarrhea.

Hopefully, once the medication has taken care of the hookworms she’ll feel better and have better bowel control.

You may also want to evaluate the type of food she’s being fed. We have a great section on feeding dogs on the website.

Good luck with her!
