Are the training rules you use when raising puppies less strict for 30-40 pound dog that will be a family companion only?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy,

I love your training principles, eBooks, podcasts and videos.

I have encountered a couple of contradictions in the material.

Mostly with meeting people and playing with toys.

Are the rules less strict for non-working, non-agressive dogs? I'm trying to develop a training plan for a medium family dog (30-40 lbs) and I just want to make sure I'm doing a good job without overdoing it.

Thanks Cindy,
Matt

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I raise all my puppies (family dogs & working dogs) pretty much the same way, but make allowances for each dog based on the temperament, confidence and personality of the pup. I may ease up later on, after the foundation of engagement is firmly in place AND once I know what my end goal with that pup will be (family dog only vs. competition).

I encourage everyone to take the info we offer and use it to the degree that works for them, their situation and lifestyle and most importantly, their particular pup.

You can be as relaxed or strict about any of these things as you wish. After raising lots of puppies and one human kid I can say this with confidence… it’s always easier to be strict at first and then ease up than the other way around.
