My dog bit me & tore my lip and a couple months ago she bit my daughter in the lip. She isn’t a biter so I thought maybe she smelled other dogs on our clothing. She seems sad after each event.

Full Question:
My ten year old Keeshonden bit me and tore my lip. This happened on the same day that I had been playing with another dog up close away from home. I was behind her head and she turned and bit my lip off. I believe it was because I had the smell of the other dog all over me and my dog wasn't looking. The only other time this had happened was a couple of months prior when my dog bit my daughter on the lip (not as hard) after she had been playing with a dog earlier that day at a friend's home. My daughter caught her off guard while the dog was sleeping. I put these two incidents together with the fact that she isn't a biter (other than when we try to take food or garbage) and thought it may have something to do with the other dogs' scents being in our clothing. Could our dog have smelled before seeing? She seemed very sad after each event.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
If your dog tries to bite when you take things from her and bites people in the face, she’s a biter.

This is a dog that needs to have rules, training and supervision. Smelling another dog is no excuse for biting people. She’s bitten two members of your family in the face in the last few months, I would be taking this very seriously.

If you would like suggestions on what to do wither her I’d be glad to make some recommendations for training materials. In the meantime, we have a number of eBooks, which include topics that may help you.
