Where do I measure my dog for a harness and which tracking line would work the best?

Full Question:
Good afternoon. I just joined a Schutzhund club and I?m looking to purchase a harness and tracking line.

My first question is in regards to the harness. My GSD is a 70-75 lb male, 11 months & 1 week old today. What size harness would be appropriate? Where exactly would I measure him? I?m guessing it would be the brown version (25 to 39?).

My tracking line question is which material would be good to have. I certainly don?t need the ?best,? but I also don?t want one that will be ruined in a short amount of time. What are your thoughts? Nylon, Bevis, or Synthetic?

I look forward to your response.

Thank you, Glenn

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Hi Glenn,

For an appropriate harness, you measure around the girth (chest area behind front legs).

If you look at this harness page, notice the side view of the dog wearing the harness, and the strap that goes around his midsection. That is the girth measurement.

As far as a tracking line, I find that every one has a different preference to the material. It’s really all about what feels good to YOU. The bevis and nylon can get stinky if they get wet and are not allowed to dry properly.
