Q. Any advice on how to socialize a 12 week old GSD and 8 month old Dachshund safely?
Hi Cindy,

We have recently acquired a GSD girl who is 12 weeks old. She is a good girl and learning but becomes very excited and wants to play when my daughter brings her 8 month old spayed female dachshund over to visit. She also wants to play, but the GSD stands much higher than her and mouths her. I have kept her leashed and don't allow her to continue the behavior, but the dachshund bears her teeth. We want them to eventually become friends, just after some advice. We also have an older dachshund who we just keep safe and don't let them interact directly as the puppy gets too excited. Thanks

A. I would watch the Living with Your Puppy and Managing Dogs in the Home training DVDs.

Also, Raising a Puppy with Michael Ellis (it's almost 7 hours of information).

Having a new puppy and integrating her into a home where they are going to have to interact safely with other dogs is first and foremost an exercise in managing all interactions so that there are no bad experiences for either dog. It's labor intensive for a while but if done properly it's worth the investment of time.

Every new puppy owner has the same image of what they want their new dog to be like as an adult. First and foremost, everyone wants a great relationship with their dog but beyond that, those who plan on keeping their dog in their home want a calm, well-mannered, obedient house dog that minds and respects their family and friends. Those who plan on keeping their dog outside want a calm well mannered dog that is respectful to the family and is quiet in the yard or kennel. They only want their dog to bark at strangers that come near the home. New dog owners think the road to success only involves obedience training and house training new puppies. Well that is the old wives tale that is been spread for 100 years and nothing could be further from the truth.
