Any suggestions to curb/minimize barking behavior other than ignoring the behavior?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy! I've emailed before for help with my Belgian Malinois pup and your suggestions have been helpful, particularly in regards to puppy biting. A new problem has arisen: he barks, and it appears to be motivated by him seeking my attention (there is also the possibility that the attention seeking barking behavior may result from anxiety - anxious about me leaving - but I'm not sure.) Question: Any suggestions to curb/minimize the barking behavior other than ignoring the behavior?
Cindy
Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I believe I had given some suggestions about barking in the past, control the environment, don't reward barking with attention and put your crate in an area where he's not watching every little thing go on if he has a tendency to bark. This is one of those issues that seems to run in some families of dogs more than others and if your dog has a genetic tendency to be noisy or vocal when frustrated or anxious then you need to think "ahead" to situations that trigger barking and try to minimize his ability to practice it.

You may want to play a radio or tv in his crate area so he's not hearing you leave, make sure he has appropriate things to chew or occupy him in the crate and you may also need to put a sheet over the crate so he's not seeing things that stimulate him to bark.

Good suggestions! Thank-you Cindy!
