Hi, everyone!
I have been researching into APBT rescue, and almost decided to adopt an one-year-old female pretty soon. I was trying her out at home how she gets along with my current GSD and stuff.... Anyway, I put her on prong collar. Whenever she pulls hard and back up with sudden force such as trying to chase a squarrel or something, the link of prong collar pops open comepletely. It has happened twice. Thank god, she listens pretty well, and comes back to me.
Anybody know what is wrong with this? Or how to fix them? Is there certain direction of the collar I need to put on her? This collar is very new. Is it maybe too big? Any help appreciated. Thanks a lot!
TJ

I've had this problem a few times while using a prong. If I check to be sure that the links are laying completely flat, I don't have as much trouble with it. You should always always have a choke collar on the dog when you're using a prong. That way, if the prong opens up, you still have the dog on the choke chain and she won't get away.

Thanks for your suggestion. The problem with this particular APBT is that she is just recovering from kennel cough. The choke collar would irritate her trachea when pulled. When you use both prong and choke collar at the same time, does prong collar normally act first before the choke collar starts to get tightened? 'cause if both collars work at the same time, don't you beat the purpose of using prong instead of choke collar?
Thanks,
TJ

I don't think that should be a problem unless the choke collar is not big enough. I tend to use a choke collar that is longer than most people would use. That way, even when the prong tightens, the choke collar is still pretty loose.
If you can't use a choke because of the kennel cough, just make sure you have some other type of collar or something on her that is also attached to the lead. The choke collar is usually a good way to go because if the dog escapes, it isn't going to slip the choke collar. The prong collar is a great tool, but unfortunately they do open up sometimes. I was pretty surprised the first time it happened to me too, but luckily I had been warned and was prepared

While I have had 2 collers on my dog at the same time, I have never clipped them both to the lead. Really, how effective is a prong if you have another coller clipped to it? I know why you don't want your male to escape (I remember his problems) but I don't think that is the case here. How many prongs pop open? Not very many I think.
I would think that the problem is in the individual links themselves. I would buy a few extra links and replace the "looser" ones with better/tighter ones. I would probably also read over some posts on "How to fit a prong".

Really, how effective is a prong if you have another coller clipped to it? That is something I have my pet people do. Everyone starts on a buckle collar. If we go to a training collar(always a prong) I have the dog wear the collar w/o using it for two weeks. Then for the next two weeks it is double hooked. So they can start to feel the sensations. After that it is the prong by itself. If done in this way the dog never learns it is the collar that makes the correction. Thenn when the training is completed we reverse the procedure to get the collar off.

Really?? That's very interesting. I've never heard of it done that way before.
I'm so glad I let you out of detention to attend the Flinks seminar. But where is my essay?

Caniche,
I know how a prong collar is supposed to fit and I'm perfectly capable of making sure it does. The prong is just as effective with the choke collar as it is without it. I was told by 2 different dog trainers that I've worked with, that you should always use a choke with a prong collar because the prongs do tend to pop open on occasion. I'm glad they told me that, because, even though it was awhile before it happened the first time, it does happen. If this is happening to other people including the dog trainers, obviously it has nothing to do with my ability to be sure it is fitted correctly.

Melissa,
Just cuz I like arguing with you...maybe you bought a cheap $dollar store prong.
I personally have never had a prong come open.
Doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Just have never encountered it with my dogs or client dogs.
Caniche,
My essay sucks!!!

mspindler, I was not directing my reply to you. I am sorry if you found my reply offensive. I was merely trying to provide an answer to chokeout's question. I too have had loose links on my prong though it never popped open when I was using it. I simply replaced those defective links. I had never heard of this happening and do not know of anyone who had this problem. I merely suggested the links on this website as another point of reference to the prong coller. I remember reading that there were two schools of thought on how to fit a prong.
That is all. Period.
