Marker training can't be beat for a positive way to train your dog. Solid obedience, a "look" command, leave it, and a rock solid recall would be high on my list... In addition to more than enough exercise for the dog. Please keep in mind that every dog is different and you may or may not get this one to peacefully coexist. I hope you do but just caution to err on the side of being too cautious until you know for sure. Falcon is the only dog I've had in 36 years which simply is not programmed to love the kitty...

give you a lot of credit for considering the cat in introductions/training. My cat regulates his own appearances with new dogs. Things that I believe have helped at my home is keeping the new dog on a line like Betty said, marker training like Barb said. We also have a baby gate up so the cat can make a choice, aware that the gate can easily be knocked down but it should allow time to intervene when there is too much interest on what is on the other side. The first 3 days always seem the worst to me, after that at least I have a plan and have adjusted to the flow. I typically will call a new pet, a new pet for 6 months with the nothing in life is free formula and extend it longer if need be but never shorter. While the animals are adjusting be creative of ways to cease the cat run and dog chase opportunites.
Some of my dogs and cat are buddies, play chase the tail, nap together, and things. The other dogs that don't really care for that cat, after initial training of leave it, need nothing more than an occasional reminder and sometimes I need to remind the cat not to be a jerk to those dogs as well.

totally forgot to mention the wooden, attractive gate with a space cut out to allow said cat a means of escape from said gsd. At three yeats of age, daid dog is very reliable to leave it while on a down, very reliable to down (in presence of cat) if well exercised... All bets are off if cat surprises dog while dog is up and moving or under exercised, hence the gate. I realize this may say as much about me as a trainer as it might about my dog, but it is where we are. Alwaus vigilant if the two are out together since I do like the ol cat.
Still no power, still typing on smart phone and my eyes are too old and my hands too large.

Have you looked here on the site? This is the first place that I went to look for advice about the silly dog in my signature. Next I ordered the Pack Structure DVD and Basic OB DVD. I am a novice trainer and so I openly admit that I don't know squat compared to many people on this board. I think it was an excellent idea for you to ask and I wish you good luck. We are still at the baby gates and tethering stage at our house. Next on my agenda is a wire basket muzzle for months down the road if we can get there. Please let us know how it goes.

Yep, retraining the NO CHASE THE CAT here, too. My son's cat(Sami) is back here. He moved to an appartment where his friend/roomate has a NOT cat friendly pitbull. All my pups grew up with this cat...but haven't seen her in a little over 1 1/2 years. My female is ok with her, after a couple of reintroductions...my male needs to learn all over again. haha... Going to be a long couple of weeks.
Although I will say that our cat is dog-savey & knows NOT to RUN around the dogs. She will walk quickly until far enough away before she will scoot & run under a gate. Very funny to watch her do this. She will box (with claws in) & rub up against them & pur. She is an inside cat & if she ever got out into the yard.

Lol john. I think my situation will be something like that. Our cat is a mancoon or however you spell the breed. We named her murphy after murphy's law, anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and she is wild. I have no worries about her not carrying her own its just I am trying to avoid a freak accident.

Maincoon... Awesome cats. I have had two and the first, Cody, was my "heart cat". He was more canine than feline and simoly beautiful! Not a mean bone in his body... Sure miss my Cody bear.

I correct for looking at the cat in the beginning. The cat is not to be looked at.
Feeding the cat someplace high and inaccessible to the dog works for me too.
Litter box placement is important too. Someplace where the cat can do it's business in a relaxed fashion (all that scratching and burying requires time) so cat doesn't decide to eliminate outside box, a ghastly habit hard to break.
