I went to Eeklow, Belgium in September of 1996 and was able to film the Ring 3 Championships. There were 23 dogs competing and this video shows 9 of the top dogs.

The Belgian Ring is a very spectacular dog sport, much more so than Schutzhund. The only dogs that compete in the Belgian Ring are Malinois. There were no German Shepherds.

There are obedience exercises in this sport that never change. For example the heeling and jumping exercises, with the high jump being exceptionally spectacular. But the bite work exercises change according to the judge of the event. So the particular distractions a dog will face during bite work vary from competition to competition. The handlers do not know what to expect until the morning of the event.

This years muzzle work was a perfect example, the helper tossed water at the dogs from a bottle as they approached the dogs. In the long attack the dogs had to jump a hurdle before the bite, then during the bite a siren went off right next to the dog and big blue barrels were slammed on the ground right behind the dog. It was very impressive control work.

The level of control in the Belgian Ring is much higher than in schutzhund. The dogs released with a whistle and were very impressive in their "OUTS." The level of control before the bite was even more impressive. The helpers try and make the dogs bite by challenging them when they are standing right next to the handler, the dogs are only allowed to bite when the helper physically touches the handler. So the helpers challenge the devil out of the handler and dog without physically touching them and the dogs don't bite. It is pretty impressive.
